Etien Velikonja believes he has a future at Cardiff City

Wed Apr 16, 2014 7:09 pm

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news ... iff-chance

The 25-year-old joined Cardiff in the summer of 2012 from Maribor and signed a four-year deal, with the Welsh club paying more than £2million for his signature.

But Velikonja found his opportunities limited under Malky Mackay - playing in only three games.

He joined Portuguese side Rio Ave on loan in January, and he scored his first goal for them last week - but he insists that he thinks he will have a future in South Wales under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"I was happy when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed as Cardiff City manager. With his arrival I finally got a fresh start," he told Slovenia's Nogomania.

"For the first time in a year-and-a-half I got smart and honest answers and after that the club didn't complicate things when I got an offer from Portugal.

"I wanted to be loaned out even last summer, but it didn't happen back then. Even Solskjaer advised me to go on a loan so I could play regularly and return to Cardiff well prepared.

"I'm so happy that he showed such a great and positive attitude towards me. That was really nice after my bad experience with the former manager.

"My team-mates are telling me that Solskajer is doing great job so I really hope that next season I'll be part of his team."

Nice to see the players are backing Ole and not a fan of Milky the Milkman.

I'm sure Ole pushed for youngsters such as Mason and Kiss to go out and allowed Etien to leave, no ifs or butts. It's good as if we go down he'll have players prepared and match fit.

Milky didn't give Eti a chance

The milkman just let them rot in the dvp, or not playing atall for some, clueless manager.

How he never loaned out even if we paid the full wages is madness.

Completely agree, I think we are paying 20% of his wages atm, Rio Ave aren't exactly rich. I'd rather us keep a player in tip top condition than let him rot

Mad init. Think of the money that could of been saved loaning 5/6 players out. Did malky even realise there was a loan market, as he didn't even get anyone in for the prem, totally clueless.

Mason not being loaned out properly the last 2 seasons has meant he has taken a huge step back. Malky liked a big squad big would only ever use about 15 players.

I know, the more I think about it the more malky pisses me off. Yes he got us to the prem well done, but every other part of what he done was useless.

The replys on this thread are laughable :laughing6: all the players that have come out with the bitter comments are the ones simply not good enough! Gerrard , Parkin, Jarvis! Being a manager you have to be ruthless! People saying he should have been loaned out yet people have got to want to take you out on loan first! That's why he ended up at a shit Portuguese club!

This ^^

I think it wasn't a great time for fringe players at Cardiff - but as stated above: as a manager you have to be ruthless and pick the better players!

We all know that Velikonja wasn't Malky's signing anyway :sleepy2:

Be fair pretty much every league one team and most of the championship would have taken nearly all our fringe players at the time who have been pretty much unused and should have gone out on loan .

Tommy smith , velinkonja , brayford , cornelius , Connolly , cowie and gestede all should have been loaned out beginning of the season .

Smith - easily could have got a move back to a London/Hertfordshire based side
Velikonja - had offers and we turned down
Brayford - beyond me why he didn't play for us, luckily he got a move in the end
Cornelius - less said the better
Connolly - top champ sides would have taken him
Cowie - easily would have taken a move to a top champ side
Gestede - proven with Bburn

Add me to that aswell.
Teams getting promoted to premiership need to have plans in place for the next push and in my opinion malky/moody didn't prepare correctly and found himself out of his depth.

Malky downfall was the fact he could not find the striker we needed.

Considering we were holding our own before Tan butted in I would say a half decent striker and we would have been comfortable.

Would you class the 2nd worst defensive record in the league, after being around the 6th biggest spenders in the league as holding your own :?

I would say staying out of the relelgation spots after a difficult start is holding your own.

I have nothing against Malky as i believe we should respect what he did for us. Everyone makes mistakes but the thing is that we have to learn from them.
Malky kept buying strikers who was nowhere near the quality we needed and i honestly believe that if he had bought a good striker from another PL club we would still seen a striker that couldn`t deliver due to Malky`s style.

A good striker is worth less when he has to spend most of his time coming down to pick up the ball and behave more like an attacking midfielder than Striker.
I dont see how Malky would find the right striker to fit his style and therefore i honestly believe that we would been relegated with him.

We will never know but i think all Malky`s strikers are set back a few years due to his style but i do hope Ole can get joe Mason to improve.
