Ninian Park - "The Bear Pit"?

Did anyone know of this nickname? I've heard that sometimes it was referred as "the old lady" but never the Bear Pit!.

Whilst reading through Wikipedia, it listed those names, but I don't know if it was correct especially coming from Wiki.

Anyone referred to it as this? Could you explain why?

Never heard it called the bear pit before, and the only times I've heard it called the old lady, is on message boards which makes me cringe lol was always ninian park to me. Probably been called loads of things in the media... Not all of them complimentary though

I'm 26 and was born, raised and have lived here my entire life, and I have never heard the area referred to as the bear pit.

It may be an older generation thing, but would you mind explaining the reason why people called it that. I can't find reference of it anywhere.

I do know that the site where the stadium lies used to be called Saltmead.

I have heard commentators use the term "bear pit" to describe many football grounds when the atmosphere has been intimidating and loud.
But I have never heard Ninian Park referred to as the "bear pit" as in a nicknname and certainly not the "The Old lady" not until they started pulling the decrepit place down and someone called it that on this MB.
