Solskjaer confirmed: “Craig took a bad knock against Crystal Palace and is going to the USA to see a specialist.
“We have to find out exactly how bad it is and I doubt we will see him back this season.
“He is a player who makes things happen for us and he has been terrific, but we will have to do without him over these next few weeks.”
Solskjaer turned down the chance to do TV work at the Bayern Munich versus Manchester United UEFA Champions League clash last night to attend a Cardiff City Supporters Trust meeting attended by more than 70 members. He addressed a range of issues put to him by fans still disappointed by their team’s horror show against Palace.
Solskjaer revealed he was asked to meet with owner Vincent Tan on Monday morning, two days after the crushing 3-0 home defeat.
But he says Tan offered him his full support with a pick-me-up type message.
“I am realistic and a defeat like that can hurt everybody, but he was great,” said Solskjaer.
“He called Mark Dempsey and I to a meeting because he wanted to encourage us.
“He trusts me to deal with this. I never doubted that was the case.
“It was a bad day against Crystal Palace, a tough day. Sometimes people can make knee-jerk reactions, but he believes we can keep our place in the Premier League.
“My job is to lift the players after the defeat against Palace. Vincent Tan believed it was his job to lift Mark and myself.
“I, too, am confident we can pull this off. Everybody has been hurt and I am not immune to that but we have a job to do and the team I send out against Southampton, the whole group, will believe we can win that match and, over the last five fixtures, earn the points we need.
“We accept we weren’t good enough against Crystal Palace, but we look forward and must stick together.
“Everybody still believes we are in with a chance and we will not give up.”
Explaining his views immediately post-Palace, Solskjaer continued: “For the first time I have lost a bit of sleep. I’ve been up at 4am working out how to galvanise everybody, players and staff.
“Sir Alex Ferguson rang me a couple of weeks ago and asked how things were going. I said I had not lost a minute’s sleep, but I have to admit there have been a couple of bad nights this week.
“We were poor against Palace, but I believe we can avoid relegation.
“We need a win at Southampton and we believe we can achieve that.”
