' Cardiff captain Steven Caulker not giving up on Premier League '
Cardiff captain Steven Caulker says the club have not given up hope of staying in the Premier League.
The Bluebirds are 19th with five games left, six points adrift of possible safety following Saturday's 3-0 loss to fellow strugglers Crystal Palace.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits his side need a miracle to stay up, but Caulker says it can be done.
"We've definitely given ourselves a mountain to climb now but we are still in it mathematically," said Caulker.
The Bluebirds paid a then club record £9m to Tottenham to secure the 22-year-old's services in the summer.
Brittle at the back
In the 13 Premier League games since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer became Cardiff boss the Bluebirds have conceded 31 goals.
The centre-back has played in all 33 of Cardiff's matches in the Premier League this season.
City have failed to keep a clean sheet in their past seven league matches since the 0-0 home draw at home against Aston Villa in February.
Caulker described the three goals they conceded in the defeat against Palace on Saturday as "sloppy".
He says defence is just one area in where the team needs to improve.
"We've got to fix up. We've got to be better defensively," said Caulker. "We've leaked a lot of goals of late and we've got to put them in the other end as well.
"It's still possible so we definitely won't write ourselves off. We are going to have to dig really deep. It's going to be five cup finals between now and the end of the season."
Next up for Solskjaer's men is a trip to eighth-placed Southampton.
The Saints beat Cardiff 3-0 in the Welsh capital on Boxing Day in Malky Mackay's last match in charge.
Caulker says it will be a difficult game but the Bluebirds can draw on the experience of getting results against Manchester United and City earlier in the season.
"We've got the confidence from how we played at the start of the season," said Caulker, "so we've just got to find that and get back into some form.
"Every game's going to be a fight now so we are going to have to show a lot more fight and passion than we did against Palace.
"And we need to train hard this week ahead of a tough game away at Southampton."

Took the words right out of my mouth.
Soon the season is over and sooner these journeymen have gone the better.

Needs to stop running away from attackers giving them 2 much time on the ball #poordefending needs to look at himself .

As you say blah, blah, blah it's better now that they keep quiet in regards to issuing battle cries in the press and get on with their jobs, it just makes them look even bigger fools

It would be good to see him trying to captain the side on the pitch rather than just talk about it after the event. He's got to be one of the least vocal on field captains we've ever had.

Is it just me that thinks he's overated

How the hell is he our captain? His head is always the first to drop. Scored some goals yes, but he's been average. Just very lucky he's English so the media think he's great.

He is over rated, his defending is dire and he is certainly not captain material. His defending for Puncheon's second goal on Saturday was piss poor. So him and most of his team mates need to make actions sound louder than words.

He never tracks players ive seen some just run past him to score

I'm glad that it's not just me that thinks Caulker is not pulling his weight. He doesn't command the back four verbally and when Declan was playing,he should have been helping him out in all aspects of his game. I disagree about the comments about the second goal because they were holding the line when lazy bones(jones) decided to move his arse in the wrong direction and played them onside.Someone has got to command the back four and to me,it's either the captain or goalkeeper, with neither doing it at the moment. The most disappointing thing to me on saturday, was that most of the team didn't put a shift in against a team I felt we had a chance against.

His girlfriend who I believe works for Social Services has been telling a work friend that Liverpool are on the phone to him ten times a day , so I would bet my house on him playing for Liverpool next season.

He's not the main one who is a lot mind daya I know he goes straight home after most games and then comes back in for training cor the week there's a good few players who go out regularly not saying they can't go out mind

In my opinion Caulker should never be Captain, to quiet on the pitch, never see him barking orders like other captains you see at other clubs, Juan Cala would be the far better option.
When he was warming up on the side of the pitch Saturday he was very vocal in telling players what they should be doing, even to a point that he was looking to get the ball back into play when it was out more than the players were on the pitch !
