I remember back on the night with the game against Charlton. A tense atmosphere, and a nervy one. But as soon as word got out that Watford just conceded, it all got a bit more party like. Full time whistle went, everyone going crazy! This is it! The Premier League! When it had all sunk in, our thoughts turned to next season.
Forward on a year, and it has been dreadful. There are many things to base this on, but one main one is the signings.
In the summer transfer window, it had been released that £25 million would be spent, and we all licked our lips at the potential names coming in. Midway through June, still no signings, but Malky insisted that we would get quality in. Towards the end of June, we hear that Blackpool have accepted an offer for Tom Ince from us. He later declined (Which would be a re-occuring theme here). Start on July and an unknown Andreas Cornelius came in for a hefty £8 million. A big price tag, but surely will show that off. 2 signings in John Brayford and Simon Moore added to the squad. Moore being a reserve keeper, and Brayford looking to push for a starting spot. Almost £10 million spent already.
An outrageous report linking England international Steven Caulker with a move to us. What a signing! Another £8 million, but worth it. Then more failed bids came in. Wanyama and Capoue turned us down, in hope that a bigger team would come in for them, and they got just what they wanted. Nevermind, Gary Medel came in for around £10 million. Another great signing though. Kevin Theophile-Catherine and Peter Odemwingie came in to add another £4 million to the money spent.
Now, the only decent signings look like Caulker and Medel. We lost a ridiculous amount of money from Andreas Cornelius and barely played 200 minutes of football for us. A supposed argument with Malky meant Brayford was overlooked and now shipped out on loan to a league 1 club. KTC looks good in a few games, but looks out of position in many others (like today). Peter Odemwingie with just 1 goal in 15 appearances.
I hate to say it but our signings were poor. Look at Hull, Jake Livermore and Tom Huddlestone in in the summer, and Jelavic and Long in in the winter transfer window. 4 excellent signings of proven Premier League players and 4 of who beat us 4-0.
At the time of the sacking, I was glad. Under Mackay, it was such boring football to watch. It was frustrating to see us go to Norwich and play for a 0-0. One of the main reasons why Malky Mackay was sacked was because of his signings, which many of you can agree with. It seemed to come at an okay time for us, mid season and with the winter transfer window still to go.
In came Ole. A manager with clear attacking intent which is what many of us wanted. We just wanted it to be a swift takeover and a change for the better.
I then come to Ole's signings. With not as much money as Mackay had, he went into the transfer window, wanting to get his philosophy through to the team. Along with Ole came Magnus Wolff Eikrem, Mats Møller Dæhli and Jo Inge Berget. A hyped up to help us going forward. Looking at it now, only little Mats is good out of those 3. In came Jones for a swap with Odemwingie (which is what many of us wanted). 2 bright prospects from United came in with Fabio and Zaha added to the team. A late signing of Juan Cala is not to be forgotten.
Any of those players looking good? Mats Møller Dæhli and maybe Juan Cala. Eikrem and Berget have had barely any playing time. Fabio looks a bit shakey. Jones was brought in so that he could get the ball down and work with Campbell. His laziness has shown massively since he's been here. I never really rated Zaha, but welcomed him to the team. The game against Norwich at home, he came on and changed things massively. It seemed like a good signing. But he is also lazy in my opinion, and if things aren't going his way, he will give up. Today, he was poor.
Ole doesn't really seem to know what his best side is and is changing it too much I think. His substitutions were poor today. Bellamy needed to come on a lot sooner, and the fact Don Cowie came on when we're chasing 2 goals says it all. We have 2 strikers, the rest are out on loan. Some may not agree but I think if Joe Mason was played this season, he'd get us the goals with his composure.
I do think it will be hard to stay up now, but I will support the team throughout. I also want to stick by Ole next season, to give him a chance. I just wanted your opinions on the signings made this season?
