" History Suggests Cardiff Have Edge Over Crystal Palace In Decisive Dogfight "

Friday April 4th, 2014

Crystal Palace’s away form is poor generally, but particularly bad at Cardiff, where they’ve failed to win on their last nine visits. The Eagles though, while not soaring, have improved in recent matches away and are capable of doing what they did at Sunderland and grinding out a draw.

Two teams who were vying for the headlines last Saturday meet in another huge clash down at the bottom of the league. It was the nature of Cardiff’s draw at West Brom that merited attention; salvaging a point through a dramatic leveller with virtually the last kick only a minute after the home side had thrown the crowd into hysterics with what looked like a winner of their own. Mats Moller Daehli’s 95th minute strike, which made the final score 3-3, might be the goal that keeps Cardiff up.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team, now third from bottom but having played three more games than 19th-placed Sunderland, had already shown great character to come back from an early two-goal deficit at the Hawthorns and the result will strengthen their belief that they can still survive. To do so they’ll need to win as many games as possible, starting with this home match against another rival.

Palace produced without question the most eye-catching result of last weekend with that epic 1-0 win over Chelsea, which created a four-point gap between them and the relegation zone. It was a performance in which the Eagles demonstrated how much more difficult they are to score against under Tony Pulis, compared to the early season side of Ian Holloway, which looked odds-on to be relegated. Pulis has particularly worked wonders at home, with six wins from their last ten matches there and five of them achieved with clean sheets.

It’s a strong run of form they’ll want to continue, with Manchester City and Liverpool their two final games at Selhurst Park and a possibility they’ll still need points. Defeat at Cardiff would leave Palace only two points above the Welsh side, while a win would go a long way to putting them safe.
