Sunderland have been fined by the Premier League after they fielded an ineligible player in four league matches earlier in the season.

Striker Ji Dong-Won, 22, played against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United before Sunderland informed the Premier League they had made an administrative error.

It is understood they were made aware of the error in December and Sunderland settled the fine in early 2014.

The club will not be deducted points.

as there has been precedents set before for points deductions i would imagine if they finish 4th from bottom that the team below them will get its legal team in full swing.

The only points deductions have been relevent to the points gained while playing the player. So, at most, it will be a single point.

If Sunderland survive by goal difference or a single point it could be very interesting.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: Cardiff City manager says he didn't expect Sunderland points deduction over Ji Dong-Won -

Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had his say on the Sunderland ineligible player row - saying he "didn't expect" his relegation rivals to have points deducted.

Sunderland escaped being stripped of points after it came to light they fielded South Korean striker Ji Dong-Won in four games at the start of the season when he was ineligible.

Ji had returned to Wearside from a loan spell with German outfit Augsburg but proper international clearance had not been sought for him to play in Premier League games against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Manchester United and a Capital One Cup win over MK Dons.

Cardiff are one point clear of Sunderland in the league in 18th but Gus Poyet's men have two games in hand.

Asked whether Sunderland should have had points deducted for their mistake, Solskjaer said on Friday: “First of all they noticed, held their hands up and you have to admire that. The FA have acted and we have to accept that. I did not expect points to be deducted. We accept the outcome."

He later clarified his position, adding: "I did not say I'm not bothered, but there’s nothing iI can do.

"We have to accept the decision. We have to trust them to make the right decision according to the rules.

"We have to go up there (The Stadium of Light) and take three points off them."

The FA set a president when West Ham weren't deducted points over that Tevez business a few years ago. Warnock had a very good point, that he's got a relegation on his CV that shouldn't be there. (Sheffield United went down). Sir Trevor's influence?

Add to that QPR, the season they got promoted. Warnock again, but the other way round!

Seems that fines are the order of the day now. The only thing that clubs seem to get deducted points for these days is going into administration.

Personally, think that fielding ineligible players should lead to points deducted. No excuses. These blokes should not be on the pitch.
