He had said something along the lines of Cardiff not being a big club, and that they would get less than 20,000 for this important match. I think we got promoted shortly after, and I have a feeling Crystal Palace were relegated that season.

they missed out on promotion on the very last day.....there were only 2 games that night Bury V Cardiff and Chester vPalace,
it was still possible for palace to go up instead of us.....but we won and they lost, pretty sure their team coach was involved in an accident on way to game

My memory is not up to much, put it down to age. I seem to remember around that time, Malcom Allison getting a lot of stick from the City fans when Palace played here. Think he had been having an affair with someone called Mary Brown, and the City fans were chanting "who's up Mary Brown" each time he got up off the bench.
I remember the Leeds game around the same period, they completely outclassed us, although Ian Gibson gave a good account of himself. Not sure if Bill Irwin in goal for us made what many considered to be the save of the season in the same match. As I said, a long time back, and my memory is not what it was, may be getting my goalkeepers mixed up.

you got most of that correct, just where Palace were in the table, it looked like hereford palace and ourselves for promotion for quite a while but millwall under george graham came on a run,i think it was 8 straight wins......squeezed palace out....we did actually relegate Palace at NP two years prior to that..had they beaten us,it would have been us not them going down.we went down the following year.

We lost to two Jonny Giles goals. I missed both goals, well actually I missed most of the match because as a 12 year old if you were not at the front you basically saw nothing. With todays Health and Safety paranoia we will never see a stadium filled like that again.
