In 09/10 Wigan stayed up with a -42 GD. In the same year 31 points would have kept you in the premier league.

The magic 40 point mark has become a mythical target mainly created by managers of premier league sides outside of the 'top six' as a target for survival . I haven't fully researched it but I believe the average to stay up is around 34/35 points.

I agree. I believe it is mathematically possible to stay up with 8 points providing you have a superior GD?
