Cardiff City offer Don Cowie new two-year deal after rejecting Blackburn Rovers loan bid

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=138680&p=1448403#p1448403

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to keep Don Cowie in his Cardiff City squad over the rest of this season and beyond.

The Bluebirds manager has offered the Scottish international a new two year contract – and Blackburn Rovers have had an approach to sign Cowie on loan rejected.

Gary Bowyer, Blackburn’s manager, wanted Cowie to join two other ex-City players, Rudy Gestede and Craig Conway, in his Championship squad.

Both centre-forward Gestede and winger Conway have proved a hit with Blackburn since their arrival at Ewood Park in January.

Benin international Gestede, 25, has scored four goals in 13 appearances, while Conway, who has seven caps for Scotland, has fired three in nine games.

Cowie, though, is staying with Cardiff after Blackburn’s approach on the final day of the emergency transfer window proved unsuccessful.

Cowie, 31, remains part of Cardiff’s Premier League squad – his last match was against Hull City at home – for the rest of this season, but won’t rush to accept a new contract offer.

His current deal ends this summer, but Cowie is keen to be playing regularly and may wait until it’s clear if Cardiff stay up or are relegated this season before making a decision.

Blackburn’s move for Cowie has been turned down, but the Bluebirds still have nine players out on loan.

Winger Kadeem Harris might have made it 10 when Brentford wanted to sign him for a second spell at the London club, but he is still recovering from a foot injury.

Striker Joe Mason is in a second loan spell at Bolton Wanderers, scoring four goals in 14 appearances, while Nicky Maynard has netted three times in 11 matches at Wigan Athletic.

Joe Ralls, Cardiff’s 20-year-old midfield player, is playing a key role in Yeovil Town’s relegation battle. He fired Yeovil ahead in a 1-1 draw at Leicester City this week and has four goals in 25 games.

Slovakian Filip Kiss is playing Scottish Premier League football for Ross County, scoring four times in 10 appearances, while Slovenian marksman Etien Velikonja is on loan with Portuguese club Rio Ave, but has yet to score in three matches.

Goalkeeper Simon Moore, Cardiff’s £125,000 signing from Brentford when Malky Mackay was manager, has played six times for Bristol City, but is currently recovering from a groin strain, and Ben Nugent is playing for Peterborough United.

Centre-half Adedeji Oshilaja, on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, has recovered from a toe injury and has had his stay at Hillsborough extended until the end of this season.

Full-back John Brayford, meanwhile, has put behind him the misery of his six months with Cardiff City and is loving life with Sheffield United.

The Bluebirds signed Brayford from Derby County for £1.5m last summer, but he did not make any appearances at Premier League level before going on loan to Bramall Lane in January.

Brayford scored in United’s 2-0 FA Cup win against Charlton Athletic and the Blades now face Hull City in the semi-finals.

Resigned to going down if they keeping Cowie

He's not a bad player

He just doesn't do enough to be worth an extension even on the championship

Low wages, fits into a few positions. Naturally fit so van fill in at short notice. Not the worse decision.

Not a bad move by the club but I reckon he'll move on to wherever Malky goes next

Cowrie is a decent midfielder with a good engine. Admittedly he may not get regular games for Cardiff if we survive in the premier league. Ole may be retaining him to keep pushing the work rate of other midfielders in the squad.

So no actual quotes from the club to say that they have offered him a 2 year deal then?

If the manager thinks the future of the club is donkeys like Cowie then gawd help us next season.

McNaughton is another one; he should have been left at Bolton.

I can foresee nest season starting against eg Ipswich with the likes of Lewis, Connelly, Taylor, Cowie, McNaughton, Eikrem, Beget etc bulking up the team.

Wasn't this deal offered to Cowie some weeks ago, long before Blackburns interest was rebuffed? :ole:

Why the hell are we offering a player that can't even get in our squad a 2 year extension ? Doesn't make sense to me
