The 34-year-old has had two spells with the reds and says Brendan Rodgers' style reminds him of teams from the 70s and 80s

Cardiff City's Craig Bellamy will be helping the Bluebirds try to pull off a shock result against Liverpool, but admits he then hopes his former club goes on to win the title.

This weekend’s big clash in the Welsh capital sees both sides desperate for the points for very different reasons with Cardiff fighting relegation and the Reds in second and with real designs on topping the table.

Cardiff-born Bellamy, who had two spells at Liverpool, admits to being a big fan of the style adopted by manager Brendan Rodgers at the Merseyside club and he believes the current Reds’ side, who are the top-scorers in the top-flight, are a flashback to the 1970s and 1980s when the club dominated European football for long stretches.

Despite his unswerving allegiance to his hometown club, after this weekend’s hostilities Bellamy believes Liverpool can go on and seal the title and can also go on and dominate the English game again for years to come.

“A lot of the fans have grown up watching that type of football. Liverpool would always, when they didn’t have the ball, get it back very quickly,” Bellamy told Liverpool’s official site.

"They had high energy doing that and when they had the ball, they would keep it. That’s why Liverpool were so successful for long periods. This team now is the closest I’ve seen to that.

“It’s no disrespect to any of the players before that, it’s just that Brendan fits what Liverpool have been doing in their most successful periods, 20 to 30 years ago. I get so excited watching Liverpool.

“When you’re a supporter, you’ll support no matter what, but actually watching this Liverpool team, it’s the Liverpool team I grew up watching. It really is, especially after last Sunday.

“I just feel this is such a great opportunity for Liverpool now to really establish themselves, and hopefully go on and not just win a title, but kick on from there and dominate for a number of years.”

I want Chelsea to win the title before they come to Cardiff. That way they could be coming to Cardiff on the last day of the season in party mode just waiting for the cup, when we might need the win.
