Steven Caulker should start for England

Mon Mar 17, 2014 3:01 pm

He's been our top performer all season and is our second highest goalscorer. He's fit, played more mins than anyone else so why shouldn't he play for England in Brazil? Smalling and Jones are out of form and Jagielka is struggling for fitness. I completely agree with this article about him: http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/03/14/five-reasons-caulker-must-start-for-england-in-brazil/

Of course you would agree with the article seeing as you wrote it

I think he's with an outside chance of getting a spot in the squad going to Brazil but Cahill, Jagielka and maybe even Jones I would say are better than him at the moment.

He shouldn't start but he adds a different option in the squad and should make the bench for Costa Rica at least.

Damn that was awful to read.

He has played every league match this season meaning he'll be burnt out come the world cup. At his age he needs rest otherwise it'll ruin him later down the line.

Anyone can get injuries. Some more than others but he has an injury can occur in any match or any training session. I am not clued up on his injury history so not sure if they were such a problem.

Yeah he'll be a danger from a set-piece.

Marshall has been our best player. NQAT

What does this even mean? If you're defending for long periods but conceding bucket loads then that is a bad thing surely? Now I am not shouldering the blame onto Caulker because he has been good this season and he needs an experienced defender alongside him but he has to do better especially to get over the likes of Cahill and Jagielka who have been great this season.

Should he go to Brazil? Possibly. But Davies, Cahill and Jagielka have been better (I doubt Davies will get called up but he has been better than Caulker so he is ahead of him in the pecking order) Then there is the obvious call-ups for Smalling and Jones because they play for United so he goes further down the order.

He will play for England consistently in the future imo but now is far too early to be making him start most games in the WC after coming off of a mentally and physically exhausting campaign with us.

IMO this World Cup is coming too soon for Caulker unless some dramatic injuries happen to other tried and tested CHs. He will probably be an established squad member by 2018, before which he will be playing in a top 4 team, unfortunately.
