Nicolas Anelka: I've quit West Brom

Striker Nicolas Anelka claims he has quit West Bromwich Albion.

Anelka was recently given a five-match suspension by the Football Association for his controversial 'quenelle' gesture.

And on Friday afternoon the Frenchman announced that he was told he could return to the West Brom 'group' only under certain conditions which he could not accept, and he has therefore released himself from his contract.

Anelka sent three tweets, in French. One said that he has to leave the Hawthorns because he wishes to "protect" his "integrity."

The gesture is considered anti-Semitic, particularly in France.

Anelka insisted he is not racist, and that the gesture is anti-Establishment, not anti-Semitic. The gesture was first performed by a French comedian - and friend of Anelka - Dieudonne, who has several convictions for anti-Semitism.

Anelka was charged by the FA with misconduct, found guilty after a two-day hearing at the end of February and handed a five-match ban.

West Brom fined him £80,000 and he was ordered to complete a compulsory education course.

Anelka’s Twitter Qwitting: News to West Brom, which hasn’t heard from French striker
Nicholas MendolaMar 14, 2014, 6:56 PM EDT

He said he was done with the Baggies earlier today, but Nicolas Anelka may need a lesson in how contracts work.

West Bromwich Albion have yet to hear from the “unprofessional” and out-of-favor striker aside from the statements posted earlier today on Anelka’s Twitter (Or should we say Qwitter? I’ll see myself out, thanks).

Anelka took to social media Friday to announce that he had terminated his contract to preserve his integrity. Some would argue he lost most of that during his long and awkward reactions to getting banned for a perceived anti-Semitic goal celebration against West Ham in December, but I digress.

Anelka Tweeted (translated from French):

“In order to preserve my integrity, I’ve terminated my contract with West Brom with immediate effect.”

“Following discussions between the club and myself, certain conditions have been set for me to rejoin the group, which I can’t accept.”
