Club historian Richard Shepherd takes a look back at the history between City and Everton

A win at Goodison Park on Saturday would be City's first away to Everton in 88 years."
MATCH FACT

This Saturday, Cardiff City Football Club makes its first visit to Everton and Goodison Park in almost 35-years.

1979-80 – Everton 2-0 Cardiff City – Tuesday, 28th August 1979 – Football League Cup second round.

Our last visit to Goodison Park came in the League Cup second round, first leg where City lost 2-0 in front of 18,061. Eight days later the Bluebirds welcomed the Toffees for the second leg at Ninian Park when John Buchanan scored to give City a 1-0 victory, though not enough to progress going out by the 2-1 aggregate scoreline.

The last win at Goodison:

1926-27 – Everton 0-1 Cardiff City – Saturday, 11th December 1926 – English Division One.

It is eighty-eight years since the Bluebirds last recorded a victory at Goodison Park. On that day, 27,101 were present as Hughie Ferguson claimed a 1-0 win in Division One.

Before this season, the Bluebirds have made sixteen trips to Goodison Park in all competitions with a record of three wins, five draws and eight defeats.

TOFFEE CONNECTIONS…

Two famous Evertonians, Kevin Ratcliffe and Brian Harris, went on to play for Cardiff City after League and FA Cup success with the Toffees.

Brian Harris was part of Everton’s 1962/63 League Championship winning side before going on to win an FA Cup winners’ medal in 1966. He joined Cardiff City in October of that year, and spent five years with as a Bluebirds, captaining City to the semi-final of the European Cup Winners Cup in 1967/68.

Welsh International Kevin Ratcliffe captained Everton to their 1984 FA Cup Final win, and led them to the 1985 and 1987 League Championships. In January 1993 he joined Cardiff City after a brief spell at Dundee and helped the Bluebirds to the Third Division title that season.

Other links included former winger George Beare who joined the club in 1914 and Joe Clennell who arrived from Everton for a then substantial fee of £1,500 in November 1921, Clennell went on to help establish the Bluebirds into one of the leading sides in the country in the following years.

Clennell ran an off-license business in Liverpool when he joined the City, and while still a player he then became landlord of the Lansdowne in Canton before taking over the Robin Hood on Severn Road.

Ernie Gault, Jimmy McCambridge and Jack Deighton are others to have played for both clubs while Eddie Youds was the last player City signed from the Toffees, joining on a loan deal in December 1989.

I wish it could be true, but just looking at their last home game against West Ham they had 21 shots on target and with Lukaku in their ranks there is always a goal coming. So they will probably win.
Other than a loss, I think the best we can hope for is a 0-0 bore draw where we suck the life out of the game.
In the unlikely event that we win, our best hope is that we hold out for 75mins, score a headed goal from a corner and hang on to the final whistle.
There, that covers everything!

IMO Ole has worked out his system for playing away Lukaku, will have an off game, will be 0-0 until about the 72min then we will strike the killer goal that will send the shock waves around the basement of the PL,Keep the Faith Bluebirds to win 1-0 :ayatollah: :ole:
