Buying a Laptop Help

Thu Mar 13, 2014 5:34 pm

Hey

Im not the best when it comes to computers so any help appreciated.

Basically I want a cheap laptop about £300, no more than £400, mainly for surfing the net, the only thing I really want is for it to have a CD re-write drive (if thats what its called lol), bascially wanna be able to make some CD's on it as well.

I was hoping to get it from Argos as I have £40 of vouchers and get 10% off but im not really sure what im looking for and open to using other sites.

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Cheers

Should be able to buy pretty much any laptop on the site if that's all your after, they're standard features.

Looks pretty much what you're looking for.

This is £50 more expensive but had double the RAM, not sure if you'll need that much RAM though if it's mostly for internets

What is the RAM, is it for storing things like Music etc?
Does it effect the speed of the computer?

Thanks again

The RAM is where files are stored when their open. So anything that you're using right now on PC is currently being stored in your RAM. If you have lots of files open at once you'll need a lot of RAM.

RAM would affect the ripping of CDs bur we're at the stage now where adding more of it would have very little visible impact.

The storage is your HDD which is 1TB on both those models (1000GB). You'll find it nearly impossible to fill that with music.

Got one of these for my grandaughter at Christmas and it's really good. With your vouchers and discount it will be really good value for money.

Cheers again.

Probably worth investing in the extra £50 then. Does it help for example if I had a lot of tabs open on Chrome and say a word document open at the same time, is that what the RAM is for?

Yep, any open program is held in your RAM.

My brother works in the electronics industry and always tells me that the "best value" computers £ for £ are Toshiba and Samsung laptops and reports appear to support that

My last laptop computer was a Dell, but whilst I was happy with the operation, I thought it offered poor value for the money spend buying it

Hope that helps (even a little)

Which magazine are offering a free mag on laptops, with advice on what one will suit your particular needs, go to their website and they will post it to you free of charge.

Also, for Argos look at their weekly offers mag (usually come with The Sun or get in at the store or online), you'll get a decent one cheaper then.

I also work in the industry and would agree that Toshiba laptops are good value along with Asus.
Be careful with HP laptops as we repair more of these than any other brand. We also see more fatal motherboard failures with HP than any other brand.

Another point worth considering is the operating system. If you have never used Windows 8 / 8.1 I recommend you try it out before buying. We have had a lot of customers who absolutely detest Windows 8 and ask us to downgrade their laptops to Windows 7. There are still Windows 7 laptops on the market if you know where to buy from

HP website shows full specs and it does have a DVD burner so the answer is yes. All laptops of size 15.6 ins and above will have a DVD burner.

I agree with Blue Legend though. HP have a terrible rep as far as reliability is concerned. Another one to avoid is Dell who have gone downhill the last few years. Also don't touch Fujitsu. Toshiba & Asus are both quality. Lenovo also have a good reputation.

If you really have to buy from Argos then I would consider one of these http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1469176.htm or http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5089473.htm or http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5089497.htm.
Aim for a minimum of 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive and a dual core Pentium or i3 processor - Celeron processors will be considerably slower.

Also consider checking out Ebuyer, John Lewis (2 year warranty on all laptops) or Argos Outlet on Ebay (very cheap refurbished models with 12 months warranty).
