Vincent Tan is an 'easy target' for critics - insists Cardiff City star Aron Gunnarsson

Cardiff City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson feels club owner Vincent Tan is an “easy target” with the Bluebirds in a precarious league position.

Tan’s capacity to create headlines continued this week with the Malaysian businessman reportedly offering his players a share of a ££3.7m cash bonus if they manage to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

But Tan’s offer contravened Premier League rules that say any bonuses must be outlined before the start of a season.

Although Cardiff are unlikely to face a full investigation – the club say Tan was unaware of the rule and the offer has since been withdrawn – the story has produced further unwanted headlines in a week which sees the Bluebirds involved in a survival scrap with Fulham, the only team below them in the Premier League.

But, speaking ahead of Fulham’s crunch visit tomorrow, Icelandic star Gunnarsson maintained: “It is nothing to do with us really.

“We are trying to focus on our thing which is playing football. That is the only thing we can do.

“But you can say he [Tan] is an easy target for us in this position.

“We are focusing on things and we have dealt with it quite well in the last three or four months. “

Asked about the bonus offer, Gunnarsson replied: “I didn’t hear anything so I am not sure what everyone is on about. But, like I said, he [Tan] is an easy target.”

City have failed to score in their last four league games and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must oversee a swift upturn in fortunes if the Bluebirds are to maintain their Premier League status.

Fulham’s visit offers the perfect opportunity for that to happen but Gunnarsson accepts that it will be far from easy.

“They are fighting for the three points – they need points like us,” he said.

“So they are going to come here fighting and we just have to match that. Hopefully we will have a bit of flair in our team and be better than them.

“A win would take us into the next nine games with a positive attitude and of climbing up a little bit. Hopefully we can do that.”
