Two Cardiff fans banned for 3 years
Thursday 06th March 2014.
TWO Cardiff City fans have been banned from going to regulated football games for three years because of their behaviour at the latest South Wales derby.
One of the men admitted a public order offence after making a hand gesture at a police officer. The other admitted being drunk and disorderly after being turned away from the turnstiles.
Gavin Hellins, aged 47, was refused entry to the stadium and told to go to back to the buses, prosecutor Linda Baker told Swansea Magistrates’ Court.
He was described as being unsteady on his feet and in a “boisterous” manner.
He had to be helped to the bus and then fell through the doors.
Police then saw him heading back towards the stadium and was still unsteady.
Hellins, from Nant Melyn Terrace in Tonyrefail, continued to be aggressive and had to taken to the ground by six police officers.
The other man, Neville Greene, from Court Street in Tonypandy, had been seen to make what was described as a “V sign” at a police officer through the window of a coach as it made its way into the Liberty stadium.
He said he had already argued with the police officer in a fans holding area.
Both men were unrepresented at court with Greene, aged 55, telling city magistrates: “It’s no excuse. I’d had a terrible week. Life had been grim. I’d had a good few drinks. We’d been held on a bus for hours and hours and I let it all get to me.”
Both were fined £200, told to pay costs of £85 and a £20 surcharge and given a three year Football Banning Order.
After the game, on February 8, police praised the sell-out crowd’s behaviour.

3 years for sticking your middle finger up?
football fans treated worse than prisoners once again!

3 years ban for hand gesture is absolutely ridiculous !!!!
Thu Mar 06, 2014 1:25 pm
They should have got legal advise. The banning orders are supposed to be a deterrent and I can understand that if someone is violent or causing damage , running on the pitch etc, but sticking two fingers up on a coach passing by police officers and arguing with the police over the ridiculous time it look the convoy to get to the stadium??????????? There was no need for a three year ban...surely the police could have asked the club to stop selling this fan away tickets for this season, or something like that.

Come on Steve, does flicking the V sign really warrant a three year ban? It was daft, but not that bad. I'm sure most of us have done far worse!!

Absolutely ridiculous to get a 3 year ban for that. If it was the same for the rugby over half the fanbase should be banned for f**k sake !

i have said in another post............it does seem at our club an arrest means automatic ban.........and it shouldnt..where would i find data on arrests/bans..............any thoughts?

Very harsh - a banning order should be imposed to prevent future acts/threats of violence - drunk & disorderly?
Both should, subject to the exact facts of the case, consider an appeal to the crown court.
The stats for the imposition of banning orders should be available on the MOJ website.
If not, and you really want to find out, you can make a freedom of information request

im pretty sure the last figures i read..not sure if on here........the percentage of bans in relation to arrests didnt seem correct.........we have had this rep for years and it was justified years ago but we are both family club of the year and top of the banning orders table at same time.............and as long as we have boys/men being banned for a v sign we are never bot going to be top...
Thu Mar 06, 2014 8:18 pm
They certainly can appeal the ban and should contact me if that is what they want to do,but honestly lads PLEASE get legal advice if you are to appear in court
