Skip Hire

Wed Mar 05, 2014 9:01 am

Usually get one every 5 years and have had one on my driveway for the last week.

In the last week I have had a couple of vans around asking to take some of the stuff away like anything iron. I've been able to fill my skip up twice now.

Adding to this I have noticed in the last 6 months people are leaving things like old washing machines, tumble dryers and anything of iron value out on their street around my way. Within hours this stuff is picked up and gone.

I'm not really sure if I am comfortable with this. Adding to that the guys doing this work are of ethic origins like Albanian. I just wonder if they are here legally. This thing is like them or not they are providing a useful service. My council will charge me £17 to pick up this sort of stuff and I have to give them a weeks notice. These guys come and take it away for nothing and as their are a few of them the stuff does not hang around for too long. So should I really feel uncomfortable about this but really appreciate it?

Around by me i always assumed they were just gypo's collecting scrap. That was until i got speaking to a few. They have to be registered scrap merchants and all sorts now before they can get the scrap weighed and sold. It seems regulated. Not sure if thats the case by you but being as they asked to remove from your skip and didnt just take it id assume they were legit.

Just to add, i tried to give them a bike and they would only accept if I filled a form out they had that basically says they didnt steal it.

That's all fair enough Craig.

Certainly makes me feel better if that is the case.

Just before xmas I paid the council £10 to come and take my old sofa, dining table, tv unit and curtain pole amongst other things. They told me to put it out the front and it would be collected next day.

Within an hour of putting the items outside they had all gone.

Council gave me the £10er back though.
