Brendan Rodgers identifies Cardiff defender as one player who could help tighten up Liverpool's defence
Brendan Rodgers is interested in Cardiff captain Steven Caulker as he considers how to tighten up Liverpool’s defence in the summer.
Liverpool manager Rodgers worked with Caulker for a season at Swansea after signing the central defender on loan for the Welsh club from Tottenham.
Caulker joined Cardiff for £8.5 million at the start of the season and the 22 year-old has been one of the club’s best players in a chaotic and difficult season.
Cardiff are 19th in the Premier League table and relegation to the Championship would leave them a tough task to hold on to Caulker. Should they stay up, then Spurs stand to receive another £2m for the player.
Liverpool’s need for greater strength at the back has been highlighted this month, as Rodgers’ team have conceded nine goals and Kolo Toure has endured a tough time.
Despite the fragility at the back, fourth-placed Liverpool have pulled six points clear of Tottenham in the race for a Champions League place.
It is believed the Anfield club’s summer transfer policy is likely to be affected by whether or not the club qualifies for next season’s Champions League.
While Rodgers is a fan of Caulker, it is unclear whether the Liverpool transfer committee will be as keen on a deal for him.

If Cala continues to play well then wouldnt suprise me to see him make a move for him.

£12m for caulker - money talks with top 5 clubs

If they get him and 2 new full backs in the summer, keeping their attackers, they'll win the league comfortably. Caulker is undoubtedly a great player and if he was around better defenders he would look a bit better than he does at the moment.

Caulker and Medel are the 2 players who should be allowed to leave to go to the Premier League if we go down. I think a season long loan deal with the option for the other teams to buy if we don't regain our Premier status.
If we stay up, then we should demand a decent fee for those 2. It is difficult to stand in their way if one of the top 5 want them, (although Caulker did leave the top five to come to us!)

Hes good but if liverpool want to finish in top 4 next year they and even try and go for the league they should be going for someone better than caulker. caulker needs a couple more years with a lower league team dont forget this is his first full year in the prem playing week in week out

A Cardiff fan rang into TalkSport after the game Saturday specifically to say Calas was crap.

When did Cala play well?
Thought he was excellent against Hull. Stood out head and shoulders above the rest of the back 4 both defending and on the ball.
Dando I'm not sure what you mean how?

Pretty weird thing to do when you consider the performances in defence that day.

How any of the defenders can be described as "playing well" after conceding four, I'll never know.

If we go down and can make a good few mil on him then so be it.

No, second full season in the Premier league, plus he played on-off for Spurs last season.

Well how would it not be surprising if they make a move, we have 2 centre backs who are good well 3 really.

More like when we get relegated Caulker will be off (and on the cheap).

Top class defender is Caulker. Will get 40 odd caps for England I reckon.
Comfortable on the ball and not afraid to bring it out of defence. His best quality though is the way he reads a game and then uses his pace to get in position. Anyone know his stats on interceptions and blocks? I'd imagine it's one of the highest in the league.
Good player. Could easily see him at Liverpool or back at Spurs

easily, our problems came from fullback and lack of cover from midfield. Cala dealt with what he could and well.

No chance. Caulker is terrible with the ball at his feet and Brenda likes to play it out from the back.

Looked very comfortable with the ball when he played for us, especially as he was still a teenager
