Cardiff City's Andrew Taylor banking on all his experience of relegation fights to keep Bluebirds in the Premier League
Taylor admits he felt “physically sick” when he went through the experience at Middlesbrough as they crashed out of the top flight five years ago
Andrew Taylor knows all about the hurt and pain which comes with a Premier League relegation scrap.
Taylor admits he felt “physically sick” when he went through the experience at Middlesbrough as they crashed out of the top flight five years ago.
But Taylor also helped Boro fended off the threat of relegation during three other seasons when the club finished 12th, 13th and 14th.
Now he is in the thick of a fight to beat the drop at Cardiff City, saying: “I’ve certainly got that experience of being through this.
“And coupling that with the fact that I’m one of the older boys in the group I’ll certainly look to pass on what I’ve learned in the past.
“What you do learn is that everybody needs to contribute and we will stick together.”
The Bluebirds have 11 more matches to secure their top-flight status, with Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believing they need five wins to achieve safety.
That looks a tough ask for a team who have managed only one win and four points in seven matches under the Norwegian, whose next assignment is Sunday’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur.
As Boro went down in 2009, recording one win, three draws and seven defeats in their last 11 games, Taylor admitted: “There’s nothing worse than looking at the table.
“It makes me feel physically sick when I see the position we’re in.
“It really is horrible because, as a footballer, you have your personal pride.
“When you’re in this position, that pride is dented. You feel embarrassed about what you’ve allowed the club to get itself into.
“I’ve never had to handle anything like this before. If Sky Sports or Match of the Day is on with the league table, I have to switch it off.
“I honestly feel physically sick. I can’t think of anything I hate more than that.”
This time, though, Taylor is able to take a far more measured look at Cardiff’s plight and defiantly insists there is enough character in the Bluebirds dressing room to launch a major fight for survival.
“There are still plenty of points on offer and games we can win,” he said.
“We have a great belief in our abilities to climb the table between now and May.
“There is everything to play for and there is no reason we cannot be successful in our goals.”
Taylor has been restricted to 16 Premier League appearances by suspension and injury this season, returning to the starting line-up in the 4-0 defeat at home against Hull after almost two months out following a calf operation.
But he is ready for the run-in, saying: “I had a problem with both of my calves.
“They were giving me quite a lot of trouble in terms of fatigue and recovery.
“The operation I had was successful and then it was a case of recuperating and getting back to fitness.
“When I was out it was one of the worst possible times because we’d had a change of manager.
“When a new manager comes in you want to make an impression. but after the operation I was just sitting there unable to train or play.
“Now, though, I’m fit and ready, mentally and physically, for the run-in.”

I will always support city players on the field when they pull on the BLUE shirt! But I am awfully sorry, a full back is supposed to stop a winger crossing the ball, not stand 5 metres from him and let him. I have felt sick watching him since joining us, just a full on poser. Not good enough at championship level let alone the prem.

Maybe if Taylor decided to stand big when Huddlestone shot instead of half turning, resulting in the ball deflecting off him for the first goal, we might have got a result. Taylor was worried the ball would be blasted at him and he didn't want to get hurt! Sorry Taylor, but it was YOU making me physically sick for failing to put his body on the line when it mattered!

The topic headline SHOULD read "Andrew Taylor is Total Garbage"
Mistake after mistake, caught out of position too often and worst of all turns around blames everybody else. To think he's picking up real good wages for being a shit footballer, it beggars belief!!!!!

Now he knows how we feel when he's on the team sheet. Why Ole thought he could get away with playing him I'll never know.
