' Things are "slightly tougher" for Cardiff says Malky '

Mon Feb 24, 2014 3:00 pm

Monday 24th Feb 2014.

Former Cardiff boss Malky Mackay believes his old club now face an even tougher battle to beat relegation in the wake of their humiliation against Hull on Saturday.

Cardiff suffered their biggest home defeat for 14 years in losing 4-0 to Hull, their third successive Barclays Premier League game without a goal, to leave them one place and one point off the foot of the table.

On the back of the hammering, Bluebirds manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer announced the cancellation of a warm-weather training trip to Abu Dhabi, although insisted it was not as punishment for the loss.

The defeat, though, was severely damaging for the club's survival prospects as Mackay said: "It was a real disappointing result at the weekend, a bit of a shock."

Speaking on talkSPORT, Mackay added: "With Aston Villa last week, Hull at the weekend and the game at Swansea, you would be hoping for results to pick up points, rather than (in forthcoming games) away at Tottenham and Everton, two very strong teams.
"So it is going to be hard (to stay up). It was always going to be tough, to be honest with you, but it has been made slightly tougher."
Mackay knows only too well how Solskjaer will be feeling at present, with the former Manchester United star trying to come to terms with the demands of his first job in English football's top flight.
Mackay, controversially sacked in December prior to Solskjaer's arrival, added: "It's how you respond, how you pick yourself back up, how you pick players back up.
"It's going back in on a Monday when you've had a dreadful weekend, feeling awful, with the game going through your mind every minute of the day.
"You're thinking about what you have to talk to the press about, what you say to your chairman when he phones you.
"Really, it's about getting the players ready again for a game in a few days' time."

He did say why he signed cornelius, on talksport about a month ago, just before cornelius left.
He said he was the best player in the danish league and 8.5m was a fair price because other teams wanted him, and to get a 'ready on-the-ground- and-running' premier league striker costs 2 or 3 times that much. That's what he said.

I'm very interested in what MM has to say about the situation.

He did very well for us, I believe under him we would've picked up a lot more points by now than we have done with Ole, and he's been here, he knows the club and the players. His opinion is probably one of the best you can get, because he has an insiders perspective.

If Malky was still at the helm, then right now he'd probably be preparing a £9m raid on Viborg for Thomas Dalgaard, who is currently ripping the Danish Superliga to shreds

While other clubs have paid more and ended up with worse players.

It happens at every club, the bigger the club the bigger the fees involved.

Malky is a legend and I have a lot of time for his opinion on the club that he built from scratch

He is right - we have a mountain to climb if we want any chance of staying up

I agree to an extent, madness that we allowed him to leave the way he did IMO but nothing surprises me in football anymore!

In my opinion, MM would have done no better than OGS. He was clearly unable to resolve his differences with players and ameliorate the situation with his employer (how many of us stick two fingers up in our employer's face - however odd they may be?). Admittedly, the 'goals against' may have been lower with MM. But he made some poor calls - never played Noone who plays every game now. Bellamy is enjoying playing regularly and missed when not. Brayford was never played and now appears to be showing what he can do (but will probably want a move elsewhere after losing faith in CCFC). Not even our 'star' player Cornelius was really played. OGS has a mountain to climb but has the right philosophy but it may now be too late to turn it around at this stage in the season.

What matters as far as we fans are concerned is that we don't underestimate the power we still have to influence things NOW on the field of play. If we expect young players to turn it around in front of clearly disgruntled fans, we know nothing about the psychological affect we are having on their performance. Lift your voices Canton stand, Ninian stand, Family stand and Grand stand - let's get a roar going! That fat lady isn't singing just yet!

Rubbish. A Malky side would not have put in such a lack lustre performance against the Jacks and would have not so tamely given in against Hull at home. :ayatollah:

Yes, we were poor and outplayed at Swansea and lost our confidence as the game progressed against Hull. But, to clarify, my point was more about where we would be in the table with MM. We may have had a couple more points from draws but not much else, in my opinion. Also, on your point, I remember some pretty tame performances in the Championship, even when we were top. We didn't exactly blaze across the line and were fortunate that both Hull and Watford didn't take their chances or we would have been in the play-offs!

He undoubtedly dropped a massive one with Cornelius but I think he would have just about kept us up this year. He would have at least have made us compete to stay up.

I can't see a win coming under OGS can you?

Hope I'm proved wrong and will be happier than the proverbial Larry if I am but I don't think so.

OGS was fine at Man Utd with the kids (who looked up to him) and in Norway with Norweigians (who idolised him). His name/history doesn't stand for shit in South Wales and he's not exactly been able to provide the managerial change "bounce"
that Pulis has inspired has he.
