" IS HE WORTH IT ? "

Is Wayne Rooney worth £300k per week?

Or any player for that matter ?

Daily Mail.

David Moyes is celebrating his greatest victory as Manchester United manager after Wayne Rooney committed his future to the club with a new contract.

The England striker has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal at Old Trafford worth £300,000-a-week, with the news coming as a much-needed boost for Moyes after enduring a challenging first season in charge.

Rooney's deal will run out in 2018, but he will become a club ambassador when he retires

Rooney said: 'There was a lot of speculation in the summer but I was pleased when David Moyes came in to the club.

'I’ve got a great relationship with him and he’s shown a lot of trust and faith in me. Talks have been ongoing for a long time. I’m delighted to be signed up now.

'The fans have been brilliant. I’ve said since day one that they have been brilliant. In particular during the first game of the season at Swansea, when all the speculation was going on, they were outstanding and really showed how much they are behind me and behind the team.'

Moyes said: I’m delighted. He’s a world-class player and in my eyes he was never leaving. He was always staying.

'I want to bring more Wayne Rooneys to Manchester United and have lots of quality footballers here. We certainly didn’t want to lose Wayne.'

Moyes also said he is seeing Rooney's old aggression and hunger back into his game this season.

'It was one of the things I thought may have been missing a little bit when I came in. I thought ‘Come on Wayne, go back to the old Wayne Rooney’… rugged, hungry and really committed and with an edge in his play.

'He had that and I think when you try to take that out of someone it doesn’t work. I think Wayne needs it. He’s been great from day one. There were a lot of days the fans had to be put through talk of ‘Rooney will be leaving’ but not for a minute was it ever right.'

Rooney announced the news on his Twitter, saying: 'Very happy to announce that I have signed a new extended contract with Manchester United.'

It had looked as if the 28-year-old would be leaving for pastures new last summer, with Chelsea keen to land the England man.

But Moyes stood firm and has cajoled some of the player's best performances in a red shirt over the last few months.

Moyes has experienced a difficult start to life as Reds boss, with United languishing seventh in the Premier League.

They've only won one of the last five league games, including an embarrassing 2-1 defeat at Stoke City.

Since joining from Everton in 2004, Rooney has played nearly 300 Premier League games for United, scoring 150 goals.

£300,000 a week Never.

No player is worth that in my opinion. No player is worth £100,000 a week.

Depends on your definition of "worth". Setting aside the fact that, whether he's worth it or not, £300k per week is obscene, how much revenue does Rooney actually bring in?

Financial no-brainer for United.

Consider how much it would cost to replace him if he walked away for nothing in 18 months.

£15.6m a year.

Do you honestly think he is worth that to United ?

That is £85.8m over the course of his 5.5 years contract plus he has apparently take the image rights as well.

It would probably cost them £35-40m to buy someone to replace him who would also command similar wages to this deal.

So yes, no brainer.

Purely in footballing terms - yes he is.

He's Man Utds talisman, he's a fantastic player, and my personal favorite of the worlds top 10.

In reality though, no, of course not, nobody is worth 300k a week unless they are doing something like curing cancer/improving human life. its a crazy amount of money, but that's just where the sport is now

He's worth it or they wouldn't of paid it.

Not necessarily, Moyes cocked up the last transfer window. The media finding out about Thiago and Fabregas was a mistake that Fergy never let happen. That's the class of player Utd need.... Not Fellaini.... He panicked and needed a signing.

He must have that in the back of his mind now, and letting Rooney go after a season of no success would send the utd lynch mob at his doors!

Personally, I think it's bonkers. In a month where us ' mostly normal working class blokes and ladies' are trying to find £400-£500 to pay for a season ticket, a player is being handed a contract for these wages

Not saying it is his fault, but football has gone mad, and this has a lot to do with the fact there is no connection between players/club and fans anymore.

Who plays for the shirt on their back anymore? not many....hence the divide

Perfect example of how football is slowly strangling itself, used to be a working mans game, now bit by bit the normal working man cannot afford to go to games,it's been taking over by hospitality type

Depends if you look at it in context. Man Utd expected to turnover around 2.5 billion over his contact in which he will be a big help towards earning, and get 85m of it.

Also don't forget half of it will go to the taxman, that's 8m a year. Hope George spends it wisely.
