Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
“We need 37 points to stay up, so maybe five more wins."

As he prepares to face a fellow Manchester United legend in the dugut tomorrow, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Steve Bruce once told him not to go near football management

Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that Steve Bruce, the man who he will face in the opposite dugout tomorrow, advised him to stay out of football management.

And, even though the Norwegian, who was parachuted into the heart of Cardiff City's fight for survival in January, says he could have taken the former Manchester United defender's advice and enjoyed an easy life – he says he loves life in South Wales.

Solskjaer, who just missed playing alongside Bruce at Old Trafford, said: "I don’t really know Steve Bruce that well. He left United before I signed, so we didn't get to know each other as players.

“I have chatted to him since of course

“I really look up to ex-Manchester United players who have done well and Steve is one of those. He has had his ups and downs but now seems more content.

“He told me not to get into management but I enjoy it.

“I could have had an easy life but I love being a manager.”

The Manchester United connection in tomorrow's game doesn't end with the two managers.

On loan winger Wifried Zaha has a matter of weeks left to find the top form that might inspire England boss Roy Hodgson to take a summertime punt on him at the World Cup in Brazil.

Solskjaer said: “If he plays well, Wilfried could be on the plane to Brazil.

“He has been bright in training and has taken on board what he has been told.

“It’s not about Wilf helping us, we have to help each other.

“He is a shy lad but has certainly not shown a lack of confidence in training."

In a week that the Bluebirds boss described as his best since joining the club, Solskjaer has to deal with missing lynchpin Gary Medel and club captain Mark Hudson.

He said: "Gary Medel will be out tomorrow. He came back from his trip to Seville and said he was ready but unfortuntely he won't be able to play.

“Peter Whittingham has trained well this week so we will have a look at him tomorrow.

“Mark Hudson is injured and out for the rest of the season, so we need Juan Cala, Steven Caulker and Ben Turner competing hard for the centre back positions Juan has played in La Liga this season but he needs game time in the Premier League.

“He has looked good in training and he had to go back to Seville this week but has come back ready for the rest of the season.

“We need 37 points to stay up, so maybe five more wins.

“It could be a record low, in terms of points this season, because of how tight it is.

“Or it could suddenly change and one or two could drift away. If that's the case, we need to make sure we stay in contention."

We need to win all our remaining home matches, It's that simple. Now's the time for the players to step up and cut out the silly mistakes and hopefully they can get the job done.

Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has pressed home the importance of taking all three points against Hull City on Saturday.

Solskjaer's men host Hull on Saturday knowing a victory could see Cardiff move out of the bottom three.

Four of Cardiff's five Premier League wins have come at home and the Welsh club should be hopeful of sealing success this weekend against a side that has a similarly dismal away record.

Steve Bruce's team are three points clear of the drop zone and have emerged victorious in only two league games on their travels this season, although Hull were 2-0 winners at Sunderland on their last Premier League away day.

And Solskjaer is determined to ensure that Cardiff do not miss the opportunity to claim maximum points against one of their fellow strugglers.

"The lads know the importance of the game," Solskjaer said. "This is probably the best training week we've had and we're feeling good.

"Hull have done well, but we're both in similar situations. We both need the points on Saturday.

"We're at home and this is one of the games we need to go for. Get a result on Saturday, it breeds confidence going forward.

"We need to pick up points now to make sure we're in the running for the final run in."

Why all this talk of avoiding relegation and needing to get a points total by Ole and some of the players.

All that is happening is that there is an increasing pressure of expectation and the if fear factor comes into the minds of even one or two players, exacerbated by an increasingly anxious crowd, then that will affect performances and likely the results as well.

We have to forget about relegation at this point, as Pulis said yesterday, and just focus on the next game and aim to get as much out of it as possible, looking at the next step alone.

When mountaineers climb Everest, they look at how they are going to achieve it, but they always have to take that first step and focus on the next series of steps to get to next point in their climb.

Ole just needs to focus on this game, not make it a life or death game (it isn't) and get the drive and motivation instilled within the squad of what 3 points would mean.

The steps that need to be looked at need to be more readily achievable, so the first aim is to focus on each game in turn, followed by getting out of the bottom 3 as soon as possible, followed by getting to 30 points as soon as possible and aiming to climb further up the table.

Can't see that happening though.
Should have looked to bring in players up for the relegation fight not the future.

If an alcoholic attempts to give up the drink they take it a day at a time. They never say I'm off the booze for life as its a mental mountain to climb! When I quit smoking it was always a day at a time. Now if I run a race I break it down into bits, I don't look at the whole distance and say thats what I'm doing.

We really are on self destruct as we have now told the players we HAVE to win all of our home games! Cardiff fans are to sports phycology what Genghis Khan is to soft furnishings! :(

I agree lyndipops.

I'm a Sports Psychologist and it's one of the basic things that sports people do is see the big picture/goal/aim, then break it down into the smallest and most readily available goals.

Looking at the Hull game, Hull have a good record in the first half, whereas our record is poor.

The opposite applies to the second half for each team with Hull being poor.

Ole was impressed with the way we came out of the blocks against Sunderland and apart from the Villa game we have been very slow and poor in the first halves since.

It is essential we aim to take the game to Hull in the first half in five minute segments. Each pattern of play we need to be
smart when we do not have possession with the aim of regaining possession as quickly as possible, making Hull's possession poor and ineffective.

We also have to look at increasing possession into goal attempts and those goal attempts into goals.

That will come with more effective practice, which Ole has said has been very good this week.

We will see and learn a lot from the Hull game.

Longer term, virtually every game home and away we can get something from. The hardest two games are likely to be Everton away and Chelsea at home.

AWAY GAMES 6 to play

Spurs home form is worse than their away - wins 6, draw 3, loss 4 a draw at least is very possible
Everton's home record is excellent losing only one out of 12, winning 8, drawing 3 everything is possible, but it would be an excellent result to get anything out of this game
West Brom won only 3 out of their 13 home games, drawing 6, loss 4 a draw or win here is possible
Southampton won 5 out of 13, drawing 5, loss 3 a draw is possible
Sunderland won only 3 out of 13, drawing 2, losing 8 games a win here is very possible
Newcastle won only 5 out of 13, draw 3, loss 5 getting at least a draw is very possible

HOME GAMES 6 to play
Hull, Fulham, Palace and Stoke all have poor away records and getting wins in any of these is possible.
Liverpool away have won only 5 out of 13 games, drawing and losing 4 games each a draw at least is possible

Chelsea have won 6, drawn 4, lost only 3 out of their 13 away games a draw is possible, but getting anything out of their last game of the season will be excellent.

By looking at this bigger picture, along with the recent results of
Norwich - Man C ; Chelsea - West Ham ; Southampton - Stoke ; Stoke- Man U : Man U - Fulham ; how close Fulham - Liverpool, etc. just goes to show that EVERY game is competitive IF the team believes in themselves.

This reduces the intensity of the pressure on the next game whoever we play.

Yes, we need to get results, but to reduce playing with fear and adverse pressure will help improve our performances which in turn increases our chances of getting the results we all want.
