goal scoring opportunity...

Thu Feb 20, 2014 1:43 pm

Great debate on TV/radio last 24 hours, interested to hear your views.
In a nutshell the current law is if the ref thinks a defender / keeper has denied the forward a clear goal scoring opportunity in the box it's a penalty and a red card. Outside the box it's a free kick and "in theory" a red card - albeit not all the time as we know.

Now the argument being given by most is this...keep 11 men on the pitch as much as possible, so a new rule should be if you deny a clear goal scoring opportunity it's a yellow card and penalty REGARDLESS where the offence took place.

If fifa brought that ruling in it will be a massive call but is it the right call?

What do you think?

It's a tough call, that soloution sounds good.

You have to feel for Arsenal's GK yesterday, has a fraction of a second and makes an honest attempt to get the ball and his side are basically out. In this new rule what do you do with Vorm V Campbell earlier this season? High boot, last man, but of a goal scoring opportunity too. It's all a bit wishy washy there.

It ruins games as a neutral, different if its your team involved though. IMO:

If its outside the box it should be red If its inside then yellow.

That's actually how I feel. We talk a lot in not just sport about "grey areas".
Vorm could've been deemed dangerous play which could've resulted in a red card, whilst also denying a clear scoring opportunity.
One thing it will scrutinise is penalties given for non scoring opportunities. You know the ones I mean, touching the ball past the defender / keeper and going down while going away from goal or the angle being almost impossible to score from.

When players get sent off for that really annoys me. Yes it's a foul and yes it's a pen by the letter of the law, but to see red when its clear they are not likely to score with their next touch is harsh on the extreme.

I agree with this.

A red and a penalty is like a double punishment because it is highly likely it will be scored and the opposition are a player down.

Outside the box, free kicks are unlikely to be scored and so a red should be given so opposition are punished adeqautely.

I think I'd like to see that change.
If a player breaks the offside trap with only the keeper to beat,he is probably 85% on to score. If a defender just manages to trip him outside the box, the probability of scoring drops to about 25-30% I'm guessing, which is patently unfair to the attacking team. Now if that happened in the first 30 mins then not so bad, but you imagine it happening on Saturday against Hull with 10 mins to go and it's 1-1. In that situation losing a player won't punish the defending team or really reward the attacking team.
The case of Vorm against Campbell is a good one, if he had gone on to score which he probably would have, that would have been game over. Had we had a penalty instead, again game over. However,as it was, after Vorm went off they could have hoofed it upfield and scored which would of been an injustice. just my opinion.

it's unfair on the goalkeeper at present, but we might see a rise of keepers taking the yellow card to stop players rounding them. I think there should be some middle-ground reached for the refs to follow

Interesting topic to be fair.

This although if I was a defender and knew I would only get a yellow that striker is going down every single time

Plus marshal showed them how it's done against Swansea
