CARDIFF CITY LAUNCH NEW ACADEMY NEAR BRISTOL

But Bristol clubs City and Rovers are confident they will come out on top in any battle with Cardiff to attract the region's best young footballers.

Cardiff have launched a football academy in Yate in a bid to poach talent from under the noses of both City and Rovers.

Football Association rules enable clubs to set up academies anywhere within a radius of a 90-minute car drive and the Bristol clubs have faced unwanted competition from Southampton's Bath-based recruitment centre for many years.

Although this is the first time Cardiff have ventured across the Severn and into what is considered Bristol's traditional territory, the Welsh club is not breaking any rules.
Run by Cardiff's development centres director Kurt Doyle, who oversees nine other centres in Wales, the Premier League club's newest academy will be based at the Yate International Academy.
Far from losing any sleep over Cardiff's presence on the doorstep, City head of youth recruitment Brian Tinnion welcomes the competition.
He said: "There is nothing we can do about it and it does not bother me one bit.
"All it does is give children and their parents another option when they are looking for a club. We've had Southampton based on our doorstep over in Bath for many years now and it has not been a problem.
"Now Cardiff are here, I don't see it making any great difference either. There is certainly no point in getting hot under the collar about it and I will be sleeping soundly in my bed tonight."
Because Cardiff and Southampton are Premier League clubs, Tinnion is convinced Bristol City still represent the best opportunity for local youngsters to play first-team football.
He said: "How many players from the Bristol area do you see in the first teams at those two clubs? The answer is none.
"I've watched Southampton's Under-21, Under-18 and Under-16 teams this season and they only have one Bristolian in their ranks.
"Now they are in the Premier League, Cardiff only have one homegrown academy player anywhere near their first team (left-back Declan John).
"If kids from this area have ambitions to play first-team football, then the decision is an easy one. We have an Under-21 development squad that is made up of second-year academy scholars and first-year professionals and we have seen a number of them break into the first team over the last couple of years."
Youngsters Wes Burns, Joe Bryan and Bobby Reid have all come through the Ashton Gate ranks to become regular members of City's first-team squad in League One this season.
Tinnion added: "Given the increased competition when it comes to recruiting young players, we have to ensure we are a more attractive proposition than either Cardiff or Southampton.
"We do that by giving kids an improved opportunity of playing in our first team. Overwhelmingly, the evidence says that is the case."
Rovers, meanwhile, have eight players in their first-team squad who have come through the youth ranks and Tom Curtis, the club's head of youth, said: "Everybody is fighting for the best young players and that Cardiff are to open a centre is not totally unexpected.
"Clubs all over the country are opening satellite centres and the fact of the matter is that we have a number of competitors already.
"Our first-team squad has a number of players who have come through our programme and we have also recently sold young goalkeeper Matt Macey on to Arsenal.

"A number of Premier League clubs are regularly sending scouts along to our games across the age groups."

There should be tight rules on this in my opinion...Bristol lads ideally should represent their hometown clubs. The same for Cardiffians. Gareth Bale springs to mind! :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

i asked about how does a child get picked by academys and adc centres last year about my grandson who was 6 at the time but people could see he had talent i had the response back that if he was good enough eventually he would be seen and asked to attend an adc well after scoring 60 goals for his club at under 7 level he was spotted and asked to go to a development centre where hes doing very well in fact he is classed as pre academy and they like him a lot .pity its at swansea city he trains at llandarcy and llandore they cant sign him till hes playing under 9s which is the end of this season so lets hope no more slip under the net ps i took him to cambrian and clydach which is local to us in rct and was told they were turning boys away as a so called feeder club they turned him down without even watching him play

As a parent I think you need a real "eyes wide open" mindset when it comes to football youth academies. They are only interested in your child as "product" and will make very early judgements on talent and potential. Anyone not progressing perfectly will be dropped without a second thought at a very early age. Not a great scene in my opinion.

Our academy's scouting network is considerably better than Swansea. In our younger age-groups we have kids from as far west as Pembroke and Llanelli as well as from over the bridge. We regularly beat Swansea and Bristol City at most age groups, so that would suggest that we do find the better kids. After the under 10s recently beat Swansea heavily, one of our coaches commented that he felt that the best from Swansea was no better than our weakest. There seem to be regular posts on this board from somebody moaning that their son/grandson hasn't been picked up by City. I would respectfully repeat that if they are good enough they will be scouted. Bear in mind that the step up in standard from club football to academy football is huge.
Cheers.

It's a developement centre. Any lads deemed good enough would then be invited to the academy. (Clubs only have one academy with various levels below feeding it. ) Cheers

I haven't actually looked, just stated that Cardiff does have another 200,000 more people living there. It's quite obvious unemployment is going to be more,if there are more people living there. It also shows that more people in Cardiff are in work than Newport as a whole. Statistics can be interpreted in either way.

There's nothing to grasp. Cardiff has more of a percentage out of work as they have a larger population. However, interpreted another way Cardiff has more people in work than Newport. Nothing more to add.
