The month-long emergency loan deal follows Mason’s short spell with the Trotters at the tail end of last year.

Cardiff City striker Joe Mason is set to go out on loan again to Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

The Bluebirds crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Wigan on the weekend and have found goals hard to come by in the Premier League, but have allowed the Republic Of Ireland Under-21 international to return to the Reebok Stadium.

The month-long emergency loan deal follows Mason’s short spell with the Trotters at the tail end of last year, when he made eight appearances in the league.

His solitary goal for the Lancashire club came on his full home debut during a 3-0 victory against Doncaster Rovers.

Mason’s move had been anticipated to go through on deadline day of the January transfer window, but was not able to be completed in time.

The young Bluebird is set for plenty of game time in the Championship, an opportunity neither former Cardiff boss Malky Mackay or current incumbent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have afforded him during this season’s Premier League campaign.

In a strange twist Mason’s last game for Cardiff was at the Reebok Stadium during the Bluebirds 1-0 victory in the fourth round of the FA Cup last month.

Bolton manager Dougie Freedman has drafted Mason in to provide cover up-front, with Jermaine Beckford’s injury leaving Bolton shirt in the attack department.

Freedman has made no secret of his admiration of young Mason. Ahead of the loan move, Freedman said: “He’s a young player who has all that enthusiasm and energy and while he is not a superstar yet

“I think he’s very talented. Some of my under-21s are not quite there yet, so we have had to go and borrow a striker from elsewhere.”

It remains unclear whether this latest move spells the end of Mason’s time in South Wales with the Bluebirds.

I think it's a shame that mason has not been given a proper chance this season. The lads a good finisher and should have been given a run of 3 or 4 games.

Strangely enough I saw him in Cardiff this afternoon in St David's 2. Thought he would have been up there for a medical if this was going through today.

I think its a shame Malky didnt loan him out before the championship season started and for the season. He was never going to get game time and a season on loan would have helped him massively.
