Malky Talks defends Cornelius Signing

Thu Feb 13, 2014 6:47 pm

Mackay defended the signing of Cornelius on BBC Radio Wales Sport on 6 February.

"When we signed him he was a 20-year-old huge prospect, 6ft 4in, a centre-forward who had broken into the international team," said Mackay.

"To be Danish player of the year at that age is quite something. We outbid another European team to get him.

"Unfortunately for him he took a nasty ankle knock against Accrington that kept him out for the best part of three and a half months.

"So to be judged on that - his first 10 games in English football - is what it is I suppose.

"But I've no doubts the youngster will end up a top centre-forward.

"What I said at the time still stands. £7.5m was our record transfer at the time but a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward in the Premier League costs two or three times that and every team in the Premier League are striving for someone like that."

He completly justified the signing of Cornelius - No case against him I cannot belive Tan is so blind to the reality of football

Key shareholders have also blamed Malky for the loss Cardiff made on Cornelius.. he should have been loaned out rather than sold!

I still belive he will come good and we will see him in a top league in the future

I'm up for giving chances, but you can tell if someone has got something about them or not after a few minutes. He didn't.

This, Cornelius was diabolical and was worth nowhere near the money we paid for him. I don't buy the bollocks that you need to spend 2-3x that much for a goalscorer either.

Denmark has produced some amazing footballers, I still the Acorn will end up at a top European club.

Personally, I think Belgium is the country to look for young quality players.

He's not very good. An who pays a prospect 45k a week.

I bet daehli will be twice the player he will be an he cost penny's compared to him.

Daehli, absolute quality. That is all.

Do think he should have been loaned out instead of sold back. Get his match sharpness back in Denmark while he progresses a little further, then if he still doesn't cut it try loaning him to the Championship, see how he copes with English football. If he's still shit after that get shot of him

For god's sake.

So you're saying if a person watching Messi/Ronaldo play for the first time, happened to be doing so during a complete off game which every player has undoubtedly had, then they would be able to "tell" that they're not good players?

Exactly, with young players you need patience to see if they will be good enough. Paying £45k a week is ridiculous but still. We will see what happens with Cornelius. And if it's like anything what happens to ex city players, he will have a great career.

Who was going to pay his 45k a week wages whilst he was trying to learn to jump off the ground in the championship

Yet he wouldn't spend 7.5m on Jay Rodriguez, f*cking moron

When a player is bring scouted, please remember Malky bragged about the quality of his scouting team and their dossiers, you ust first check that the basic requirements of a quality player are obvious.
Athleticism, pace, first touch, strength and competitiveness.
Anybody notice those attributes in Cornelius in the time he spent with Cardiff, to the extent that they made him 8.5 million pounds worth of talent?
Gestede was better!
Moody was the route of Malky's downfall, he chose his allegiance and it let him down.
Tan was extremely naive but he made the correct choice, the methods were unadvisable, as we know from Simon Lim's performance.

You realise thats from May 2012 right...

You also realise that spending £7.5 million on a young championship stiker and spending £7.5 million on the Danish Player of the year are fairly comparable signings...

Tip for the future - hang fire and think about what you are saying before declaring that someones a moron

Where did I mention seeing if they are good players? Making things up again, thats not like you.

You can tell, even after a few minutes IF A PLAYER HAS SOMETHING ABOUT THEM OR NOT.

It's a myth that he had no game time. I seen him with my own eyes enough to know that he was shit. He didn't jump for the ball when it was in the air couldn't control it from where ever it was coming from. What he did when he was brought on against Sunderland was pretty pathetic. He cost us two points in that game because as soon as he come it was as if we had ten men.
I'd rather a chubby unfit Nicky Maynard came on at least he would of shown some effort.

the injury doesnt account for him running into the wrong areas, his all round play was poor.wasnt a case of you wee watching and thinking,if only he was fit he would have got that..he was going the wrong f*cking way

Re: Malky Talks defends Cornelius Signing

The key point for me is that a promoted club can't spend £8m on its main striker and then announce he isn't ready yet.
That's a luxury we couldn't afford, but the reality was it was a very poor signing.

Defending the undefendable, but Malky always thinks he is right.

I just don't see how people are very surprised?

If you look at how any business is run, if a business deal that you proposed (even if the boss signs off) ends up blowing up in everyones face - more than likely you're getting the boot if you're not in favor with that boss - and it might not even be a bad deal, it is just enough for that boss to fire you.

Happens all the time and not one tear is shed - not saying it's right, but saying it's life and I'm sure Malky will get another shot with another club.

---- Eh I guess this has just been dragged out so much in front of us, ends up hurting the supporters the most.

do they share the same agent as i think ive seen before - no scouting involved then , funny how hes gone back to Copenhagen on a third of what we gave him a week , nice one Malky

Regardless, when the dust settles at the end of the season we will know the consequence of all this more clearly, we needed another top striker now not for the future. Our top scorer goal tally says it all. Personally, I reckon this will see us relegated.
Can't see Tan ever listening to the fans again either, don't sack mackay? Oh dear.....

When has he ever listened to the fans?

Aside from what colour shorts we should wear...

All this hit the ground running striker nonsense Malky spouts costing twice the 7.5m is bollocks. Didn't Shane Long and Jelovic only cost around that much?

Acorn was a flop but Malky will not admit that in public I suppose.
