rewind back to pre season.....

Thu Feb 13, 2014 6:11 pm

You're Mackay, you've got your transfer/wage/agent fee budget.

Knowing now how much people went to clubs for, who would you have been chasing?

Presumably Caulker is a no brainer for £8m, but who else would you have signed or tried to sign?

Mackay and Moody have been slagged to high heaven for signing duds, so you've got his war chest, go spending.......

Ok here goes

Caulker - spurs - 8 mill
Kone - Wigan - 6mill
Loic remy - qpr - loan 2mill fee
Tom huddlestone - spurs - 5 mill
Nikita jelavic - everton - 5 mill
Curtis Davis - brum - 4 mill
Medel -Sevilla - 11 mill
Alcaraz - free agent
Leon Barnett - Norwich - 500k

41 mill , slightly less than Malky spent but would make a great team .

The thing is, people are naming these players after seeing most of the season and seeing which players have done well. This knowledge obviously wasn't available at the beginning of the season. I also think a few of the players wouldn't have come to us, especially Tom Ince who we did try to sign and he didn't want to come to us.

Stats are misleading and you know it. We're the fans, we see him every week and we're happy with him and that's all that matters really.

Like I said, I see him every week too. Apart from the times we play at the same time - which isnt often. He is not the player he is made out to be, a lot of people are defending a price tag and a cult hero status due to his volatile reputation.

Again, I must stress that I am not saying hes a bad player - but im amazed people would still pay £11m for him. He has not been anywhere near worth that and his movement is awful.

This is a list I have complied of all best performing starting defensive midfielders from every club, if the club doesnt play a defensive midfielder then just for arguments sake I have taken the central midfielder with the most defensive duties. They are in order of total average match rating up until this point in the season.

1) Yaya Toure - 7.48 (Man City)
2) Mile Jedinak - 7.43 (Crystal Palace)
3) Lucas Leiva - 7.34 (Liverpool)
4) Morgan Schneiderlin - 7.29 (Southampton)
5) Mark Noble - 7.26 (West Ham)
6) Tom Huddlestone - 7.12 (Hull)
7) Michael Carrick - 7.1 (Man Utd)
=) James McCarthy - 7.1 (Everton)
9) Steve Sidwell - 7.09 (Fulham)
10) David Luiz - 7.03 (Chelsea)
=) Cheick Tiote - 7.03 (Newcastle)
12) Youssouf Mulumbu - 6.96 (WBA)
13) Ki Sung-Yueng - 6.93 (Sunderland
=) Matthieu Flamini - 6.93 (Arsenal)
=) Ettiene Capoue - 6.93 (Tottenham)
16) Ashley Westwood - 6.76 (Aston Villa)
17) Leon Britton - 6.75 (Swansea)
18) Bradley Johnson - 6.7 (Norwich)
19) Gary Medel - 6.69 (Cardiff)
20) Steven N'zonzi - 6.61 (Stoke)

To tie that into the thread that will also show who you could have picked up in the same position for cheaper that is performing better thus far.

I would have bought all the people that we now realise are good.

I wouldn't have bought the people that we realise are not that good.

Bye.

Its one thing playing well for Chile and another playing well in the Prem. completely different style.

Stats have been posted about 5 posts above yours and hes nowhere even close to most successful passer. Both Canas and Britton have a higher pass completion rate and both with their passes further up the field. Canas and britton above 90% with medel around 88% I think and all the while making around 10 passes per game less.

He is also inferior to both in the defensive side of the game as well as the ball retention side.

Stop being a WUM. Your comparing Medel for Cardiff to Britton/Canas for Swansea.

Put Britton or Canas in a Cardiff shirt and their stats wouldnt be as good. You averaged nearly twice as much possession as us under Mackay. Put Medel in a swansea shirt and he would be even better.

We have seen what he is capable of both at club level and at international level. The guy is world class. You just dont like the fact that we have such a quality player at Cardiff and try to belittle as much as possible.

Im just glad that no one on here is fooled by it.

Im not being a WUM at all.

Take a look at the stats I have posted. He is the 19th best performing DMC out of 20 in the Prem.

Whether he plays for us, you or United shouldn't make a difference. A tackle is a tackle and a pass is a pass. If anything the fact he plays for you has probably enhanced his stats as in your system he drops into the centre back position to conduct is passing which is an uncontested part of the field.

In fact, we will switch it on its head, tell my why (and back up with stats and reasoning like I have) to why he is one of the best performing midfielders (assuming you think that of course) and worthy of being one of the most expensive DMC's in the Prem.

Why do you lot even bother entering into debate with Roathie?

You cannot debate with someone who never has or never will be wrong on anything. The internet is full of people like it, my advice....just ignore him.

What am I wrong about? Or what have I done wrong here?

I have given my opinion and backed it up well. But you want me to accept the opposite opinion based on absolutely nothing what so ever.

That isnt how a debate works.

Sorry thats complete and utter bollocks roathie. Im convinced your just being a wum here and this whole argument has been done to death, so its pointless debating it further with you.

Stick your stats up your ass, IMO Medel is class.

Roathy you must have noticed the way he assists our centre halves though, breaks up a fair bit of play whilst he is in his regular (up until now) DM role? He plays that role well is what im saying. I know we have conceded alot but without him in that role I dread to think.

Absolutely. You are right, your center halfs arent comfortable with ball at feet so he does the distribution for them. But thise passes as a result are often 18 yards to 25 yard are when it is 1 striker on 5 defenders, there is always an outlet.

He is also good at breaking up play. However his lack of mobility limits how effective that side of his game can be and that is the key for me in that repsect.

Hes a decent player, but he has not been the player some are making out. He is in the bottom half when it comes to consistant level of performers in that position in the Premier League. Whether he will get better will remain to be seen.

However my point in this thread is not that he isnt a good player but that £11m was far too much for what others are doing (many to a better level) for a lot, lot less.
