Amir Khan may have moved a step closer to securing a fight with Floyd Mayweather following the results of a recent poll set by the pound-for-pound king.

Mayweather wanted his Twitter fans to help him decide whether to fight Khan or Marcos Maidana in his next fight this spring.

And while Maidana took an early lead, Khan appealed to his own followers and the Briton duly finished with a reported 60 percent of the vote.

Khan defeated Maidana in a humdinger in 2010 but while the former has been inactive since struggling to defeat Julio Diaz last April, Maidana is coming off a superb win over the previously undefeated Adrien Broner.

Khan pulled out of talks to fight Devon Alexander in December when it became clear he was in the runningto become Mayweather's next opponent.

This despite his back-to-back defeats to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, the latter of which remains fresh in the memory.

However, many believe Khan's notoriously fast hands could cause Mayweather more problems than the all-action Argentine.

Khan said last month that he had signed a contract to fight the world's undisputed pound-for-pound number one, and was awaiting Mayweather's response.

He might. I think he knew hatton was a livelier opponent so would never have fought him here, khan is not on the same planet and has no chance. Not even a punchers chance, actually zero chance and I dont care if his odds are 1/25 ill be collecting the free money
