World class is bandied about too much these days.

His all round game isnt the best, he has his faults but man can he save. Which IMO is the most important quality for a goalie.

I would say Marshall is a world class shot stopper who's adequate at commanding his box but his kicking isn't the best, so no, he isn't a world class goalkeeper.

Marshall's incredible late save initially came from his poor kick which allowed Villa to mount the attack in the first place. If Marshall's kicking was better, he wouldn't give possession away so cheaply to put us on the back foot and he wouldn't have to make half the world class saves he does currently have to make!

Needs to distribute quicker and put his head up to look up, only think that lets him down.

People have different definitions of world class.

Would he get into a world 11? No

Is he amongst the top 10 for his position in the world? No.

Is he good enough to compete on a world stage i.e. international - yes.

Only thing I think he could work on is his kicking - seems like he bombs it down the field, which is fine - but we often lose possession due to this - would rolling it out and starting more controlled from the back be better?

But the saves he made are pretty amazing and I'm not sure that even some of the other top GK's in the EPL if placed in the same spots would be able to make some of them.

No.

Improved massively the longer he's been at the club, but world class....not a chance. He can't kick for a start!

That said, he could get injured for the rest of the season and he'd still win player of the year by a mile he's been THAT good for us.

i think the true meaning of world class is far easier to calculate in a goalkeeper, its easier to compare different keepers than it is different midfielders for example.

would he get into a world 11? nope

is he among the top 10 in the world? do you know what, i doubt hes far off, specifically in the main attribute of a goal keeper which is stop stopping, people on here seem to critise him for "commanding the box" but i think people just like to try and look analyitcal for the sake of it. Personally cant remember a time hes flapped at a cross, and i dont think punching the ball is a negative.

anyway, im not convinced either way in the world class thing myself, just thought id get a topic going, he certainly makes world class saves, and last nights was the best of the lot but certainly not the only one.

I look at Marshall and I dont see much better about in the premiership.

I believe the premiership is the 2nd or 3rd best league in the world......it puts him up in the top 10-15 I'd say.

The last two seasons has made him our best GK in my 45 years of following the City.

He's been unbelievably consistent. He's there to save shots.......he has been magnificent.

no no no..........he has no idea how and when to do this..........he gave two awful short balls last night.

I'd rather lose possession upfield than lose possession at the back. Our back 4's distribution is atrocious so I'm all for by-passing them

Shit stopping - Yes

Reactions - Yes

Commanding area - debatable/no

Crosses - No

Are there a great amount of keepers better than him in the league overall? No

Agree with most of what you say,IMO the premiership is the best league in the world

He is on his way. Still a young keeper. Doing very well in the best league in the world.

Did you not see his pass for Campbell to run onto??

Re: Is Marshall a world class goalkeeper?

His reflexes are about the best i've ever seen but his kicking is poor and he is FAR to slow distributing the ball, we miss so many counter attacks while Marshall just stands there with the ball while the other team get back - so overall no.

Re: Is Marshall a world class goalkeeper?

Wed Feb 12, 2014 5:30 pm

Great reflexes for a big man..........one of the best shot stoppers ive ever seen.........but world class no.I dont think there are many world class keepers about at the moment.....there are a lot of old keepers in the premier league, which says a lot about the standard. He is in my opinion Scotlands best keeper, but his distribution and failure to come off his line let him down a bit.One of the best 5 in the premier league at the moment though. And a candidate for player of the year for us. :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Re: Is Marshall a world class goalkeeper?

Yes his distribution isn't great, his commanding of his area has come on leaps and bounds in my opinion... At the end of the day a goalkeeper is there to keep the goals out and that's what they should be judged on, and his ability to do that, I believe, is unrivaled in this league.

He has been let down by some bad defending this season

“Marshy”

Lambert was full of praise for the Scot after the game, who he knows from their time at Celtic.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, the Villa boss said, “‘Marshy’, who I know from Celtic, has kept them in it. He’s made two world-class saves, especially the one at the end. In the second half we were fantastic, and I thought there was only one team likely to win it.

“Leo (Bacuna) should have scored, Gabby (Agbonlahor) should have scored and the two saves ‘Marshy’ had has kept them in it.”

Potential

Lambert continued to talk up Marshall, adding, “He’s played against Barcelona in the Nou Camp and was world class that night. You’re talking about parking the bus, we parked everything that night. Then we played against Rangers on the Sunday and he was the same then.

Without him we would have far fewer points and a much worse goals against tally. He does have to improve in some areas but he's still only 28 which is pretty young for a keeper. He's top class but not yet world class however my feeling is that one of the big clubs will come in for him in the summer.
