BREAKING: #CardiffCity goalkeeper David Marshall has signed a new deal, keeping him at the club until 2018.

Cardiff City Football Club is pleased to announce that goalkeeper David Marshall has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract, securing his future with the Bluebirds until the summer of 2018.

Now in his fifth season with the Club, David has established himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in European football. Having made 88 saves to date this season – more than any other Barclays Premier League goalkeeper – he has also prevented City’s opponents scoring on five occasions. His imperious form between the sticks is coupled by the fact that he’s missed just one league game for the Club since November, 2011.

David signed for Cardiff City in the summer of 2009, leaving then League One club Norwich City with whom he’d spent the previous two and a half seasons. A Scottish international with 10 caps to his name, 28 year-old David is set to play a huge part for Club and country in the coming years.

Speaking exclusively to Cardiff City Player on Wednesday afternoon, Ole Gunnar Solskjær said of the news: “This is fantastic - we’re delighted to have been able to tie David down for the foreseeable future.

"He really enjoys being at Cardiff City and was very keen to stay with our Football Club. I was very happy when things were concluded today.

“I think this gives everybody at the Club a boost. We know now that we have one of the best goalkeepers in the country committed to us for years to come. This is welcome news ahead of Saturday’s South-Wales derby and it’s great timing for him and us as we look towards the remainder of the season.

"We’re trying to build towards the future of course, and David has shown that he’s one of the very best. This is a signal that we are serious as to our intentions for the future and that we are committed to keeping the best players here at Cardiff City."

With his future now settled, David Marshall added: "I'm delighted to have committed my future to Cardiff City. I've had a fantastic four and half years here already and I'm looking forward to enjoying many more with the Club.

“It's a privilege to be part of what we're trying to achieve and the fans have been brilliant to me from day one. We've a lot of hard work left to do this season, but we're a confident group and have plenty of ability and belief.

“Not having my contract to think about anymore is a relief and it means I can continue focussing on helping us win football matches.”

He could well be a legend here, posted about it on Twitter and signing this deal just goes onto maybe spur him on to get that status for me.

Well done by Ole and the club doing this outside the transfer window also as if it was done during the window then it would draw attention and we could end up seeing him leave if it was.

He's already a city legend as far as I am concerned. I used to be a good goalie when I was a kid, and I gave up football to play basketball ( silly me ). Saying that even if I made it as a goalie I probably would have retired by the time the big money came about.

Without a doubt the best ive seen for City.

I will never forget the other season when we played Bristol City away (lost 5-2 or something) and the fans were giving Marshall stick and saying how much better Heaton was, one guy even booed marshall and cheered Heaton.
