' Mark Hudson Cardiff City Skipper '

My personal opinion on Mark Hudson is he is to slow, makes to many mistakes for my liking, and can get severely punished by the top sides in the Premier League, but is a Quality Championship player and good enough to lead a Championship club up, but no where good enough for the Premier League.

Defender sets sights on important points haul this month

I'm very, very confident we can stay in this league. The Manager's made some good signings and added impetus."
Mark Hudson
Bluebirds Skipper Mark Hudson spoke earlier this week on the back of Saturday's 2-1 victory over Norwich City.

And with a potentially historic trip to Liberty Stadium to face Swansea City in the South-Wales derby beckoning, Mark reflected on a transitional period for the Club as well as his hopes for the rest of the season.

“The three points were much needed on Saturday, that was a big win,” Mark admitted.

“We know that February is going to be a big month and we've started it really well. We were hanging on a bit at the end but that's just the way it is in this division sometimes.

“We needed those three points desperately - January was a really tough month. We stuck in there at the end and it definitely got a bit nervy, but thanks to Marshy in particular we got three great points.”

Following the derby, City host Aston Villa and Hull City in the Barclays Premier League later in February. It’s a string of games during which the Captain feels City can kick on and propel themselves out of the relegation zone.

“We've started off with the three points we wanted against a team that are in the same situation as us” said Mark. “We need to be aiming to get as many points off the teams around us as we can.

“We need to progress and do the same as what we've done against Norwich for us to get into a good situation. I'm not going to name names but I think there are definitely worse teams than us in the league for sure.

“I'm very, very confident we can stay in this league. The Manager's made some good signings and added impetus. Hopefully we can carry this form and confidence throughout the rest of the month.

“[The Manager has] got new ideas. He wants to play attacking football, have a lot of possession and have a go at teams. That's the philosophy he's brought in and we're just trying to put that across. We've been taking on board everything he's given us for the past month.”

And with the derby fast approaching, Hudson believes the Bluebirds have the ability to complete a first historic double over their West-Walian rivals, saying: “Obviously it's at their ground, but we've beaten them already this season and we'll be looking to get another three points off them and take us towards our goal.”

Agree with what you're saying. But I still think he should play on Saturday. I think his bravery will be needed.

Hasn't had enough opportunities to be written off. Notoriously takes time to get going and then excels over a season as we have all witnessed. Probably not good enough but he consistently proves everyone wrong

I disagree and always have with the slow argument , some of the league's best defenders are slow like Terry , Vidic , Dawson and especially Mertesacker however they make up for this with how well they read the game and I believe Hudson reads the game well , i'm not for one minute saying he's as good as these players or even close however I think he can do a job for a bottom half Premier league team. I also think Hudson is by far the best leader we have and I think the defense would be a lot more organised with him at the back rather than Turner

I like him but if we stay up we need a new Cb over him or turner as ole said he wants to get established in the prem and finish in top 10 neither of them are top 10 cbs but should be ok for 1 season in the prem

Problem is caulker is better, if caulker was out injured I'd Trust him to step in on the right side of defence.

Please don't tell me you're basing your opinion of him on the recent games against West Ham and Manchester United. That would be very harsh indeed.

I've never seen his lack of speed as a massive problem. Yes, it could prove problematic were he facing someone like Walcott, Navas or Agbonlahor, but I wouldn't say it's a huge issue. Walcott plays for Arsenal and Navas plays for Man City, and we've already played the both of them twice already this season.

And how many mistakes does he make, exactly? I can't remember many (if at all) that he's made in the very few games he's played this season, and I can't recall him making too many last season.

Again, you say he can (not could) get 'severely punished by the top sides in the Premier League', but where's the evidence? I'd classify the top sides as being Arsenal (played them twice), Man City (played them twice), Chelsea (played them once), Liverpool (played them once), Everton (played them once), Tottenham (played them once) and Manchester United (played them twice). He's only played two league games so far this season, one against West Ham and one against Manchester United. Only one of the teams he's faced can be classed as a top side (and no, it's not West Ham  ). I wasn't at Old Trafford, but I don't think he made a major mistake that led to something catastrophic. So you can hardly, definitively say that he can get 'severely punished'. 'no where good enough for the Premier League' - I'd argue very much to the contrary, actually.

One more thing. Why must you reiterate your opinion of him at the top of an article like this? You've posted similar stuff before. Great, we know where you stand on him. So can't you just post the article?

Good post. Mertesacker is a good example. I wouldn't say that the others you listed are that slow (though Terry isn't lightning himself), but like you say, the majority of centre-halves in the league aren't that quick at all.

Exactly, he's only played two league games this season. Can't really judge him solely on those.

Not even close to being Premiership quality but a nice guy. Keep him as some sort of club Ambassador and useful for leadership qualities within the club.

Would like to have a look at Senor Cala Saturday. Viva!

I cant think of any other player in the last 25 years that my opinion has changed so much on. From the first game I thought he was awful slow and prone to error but he as got better every year. Where last year he was captain fantastic until his injury and for me was outright player of the year. He hasn't had a run in the team for whatever reason but I would have no hesitation in putting him in the team. We looked really shaky in defence on saturday caulker included and hudson is definitely a player who can keep his head. He has also played well in derbies before. I am more worried about our full backs than centre halfs

Annis is right watching hudson usually makes me anxious and uneasy. hudson is a great proffessional and he has left late in his career to produce his best stuff.
but hes the wrong side if 30 and he wont improve the defence from last season and last seasons defence wont be good enough to survive

I agree that Hudson does struggle for pace which is not ideal at this level.

It's a shame really because what he does have is great leadership skills and personally I think we do lack a leader on the pitch.

He might be limited in certain areas but you always know what your going to get from the guy, which is 100%.
He's the type of person you'd want along side you in the trenches.

Personally I would play him Saturday, it's the type of game where you need players like Hudson.

Re: ' Mark Hudson Cardiff City Skipper '

He does not have the ability to make up for his lack of pace.

Gabbidon has lost his pace but is able to make up for that with positional awareness which Hudson also lacks.

Hudson's weak effort at jumping for the Man Utd first goal was another example of how poor he is at this level.

It's remarkable how someone eg Distin who is 35 has kept his pace.
