Cardiff City have been told targeting Jonjo Shelvey holds the key to unlocking South Wales derby history.

Shelvey landed himself in hot water in Cardiff in November when his ‘swim away’ gesture – an apparent reference to an alleged incident in the 1980s in which City fans went into the sea as supporters clashed – brought a rap over the knuckles from the Football Association.

The Londoner has showed signs of having a short fuse in the past, famously sent off against Manchester United during his time as a Liverpool player and venting his anger at then-United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as he headed towards the Anfield dressing rooms.

“The biggest thing for me is going to be Gary Medel and Shelvey because Shelvey does like to put his foot in,” said South Wales Echo columnist Nathan Blake on this week's Blakey's Bootroom debate show.

“There’s so much on the game and Shelvey is a wind-up merchant who does get very wound himself.

“If I was playing against Swansea that’s where I would target. I’d be right into him because he’s very temperamental.

“You saw him at Cardiff get involved a couple of times, he was lucky not to get booked earlier in the game and sent off.

“I’m not saying [to the Cardiff players] start cheating and diving from tackles, but get into him and start pressing his buttons because games can be won and lost in a split second.”

Cardiff head to the Liberty Stadium on Saturday with the incentive of becoming the first team in the 85-year history of South Wales league derbies to record a double in the same season.

Ex-Swan Steven Caulker’s header settled the first game and Blake believes a historic victory could spell the end of Michael Laudrup’s Swansea reign.

Laudrup’s position is apparently uncertain following a poor results which leaves them two points above the relegation zone.

“It could implode if Cardiff went down there and did the double,” said Blake.

If Shelvey is playing we should target him and that cheat Chico.

Both players are known hot heads and after Chico's antics the weekend the ref won't put up with any shit off him.

Don't think we should bother too much about winding there player's up, our player's need to concentrate on having there game up to scratch from the ko, we can't afford to only play well for 45-60 mins like we have been. If they are on top of their game then I'm sure by doing well they'll wind the opposition up without getting themselves wound up.

Nathan Blake needs to shut his f*cking mouth. Leighton James and Angel Rangel ran their mouths and we ended up winning. So shut up Blakey and do what's best you useless pundit
