Cardiff City have paid Spanish club Getafe £1m after completing the deal to bring defender Juan Cala to the Premier League - according to reports in Spain.

The 24-year-old was at the Cardiff City Stadium finalising his move as the Bluebirds beat Norwich on Saturday, hours after buying his contract out at Getafe's La Liga rivals Sevilla.

Spanish newspaper Marca say the Bluebirds had to negotiate a fee with Madrid based Getafe as they had agreed a four-and-a-half year deal to sign the Spain under 19 defender before Friday's transfer deadline.


In an open letter to fans on Sevilla's website, popular star Cala wrote: "I'm a professional and, as such, I have to think about my future.

"I decided not to renew with the intention of growing as a player.

"I thought I was going to have time to take my departure but things move fast in football.

"The Premier League opened up a door. You are not offered a choice every day to compete in what I believe is the best league in the world. So, for me, it was clear."

The whole .... cancel contract, agree to sign for another club before the deadline then we buy him out of the contract AFTER the deadline..... just seems to be full of pitfalls.

I hope so too. Looks well dodgy to me. How can you pay the other club after the transfer deadline has gone? Sounds more like a transfer to me than offering a contract to a player who is out of contract. Surely that's not right? Anyone know the ins and outs of this type of deal. Guesses not welcome

Sounds like it went something like:
* Cala buys himself out of his contract, so becomes a Free Agent
* Getafe plan to sign him, but before they do Cardiff come in and offer them £1m not to do so - so he still remains a Free Agent
* Cardiff are able to sign him to a contract

So rather than paying Getafe for the player, they were paying them not to sign him.
