' Shocked at Villa fans '

Sun Feb 02, 2014 9:10 pm

Cardiff City offered them 2,710 tickets for their visit to us in over 40 plus years and they only want 2,173.
Cardiff took 3,033 fans to them.

I always thought of them as a big club and were less than 2 hrs away.

It is midweek, Annis. To be fair to them, they are still bringing 2k plus. They have had a couple of very frustrating seasons. Last time Birmingham were down here they brought about 4 or 500. Perhaps we're not everybody's most attractive away venue! Still a big club, still decent away midweek support.

More generally, it seems that the PL are worried about away support overall.

Its less than 2hrs by car and many of their fans live this side of Brum, They get 35,000 home crowds, a massive fan base, first visit to us in 40 plus years, they dont know what bad times are, being in the lower leagues are bad times. We went to Stoke in midweek just before Xmas, we took nearly 2,100 fans and weve been there 8 times in recent years. Were not that expensive, Also No restrictions at all.

It's a bit harsh blaming the Villa fans, it's the clubs decision. They would have sold the full allocation, I'm sure of it, but once again though, another club has taken a smaller allocation to possibly save themselves a few thousand pounds. It has happened to us a few times this season.

Maybe it is their clubs fault, but I am still shocked, I honestly thought they were a massive club.

Chief, I thought of Villa as a Top 10 in the UK supported Club.

Its only down the road.

Don't know if they have sold them all yet. Last message on their site said on general sale. Only asked for just over half the full allocations for Everton and Man City too.

Could anyone clarify if all premier clubs away followings are dwindling?

Other than top 4 or 5, there always seems like empty seats at many games.

High ticket prices, shit or expensive food/beer, all seater, sterile atmosphere, no Craic, stewards and cameras in faces etc

Outside the tele world, Is the premier losing it's pull?

Maybe they are scared of the OGS factor

Never really taken too much notice of the PL until this season, but it seems that the TV companies and league itself are concerned about dwindling away support. Not just numbers, but the away support is not always visible on TV.

Bring back the traditional 'away end'!

Live games online is killing the away support....Why go to all the fuss and expense when you can watch in your local or laptop.

Hope you don't think that I was having a go at the Blues' support there, Jeff. It was just to illustrate a point. If I was a Brummie, it would be St Andrews for me. See that you came back from 3-1 down yesterday, first Burkie, and a late, late one to level. KRO! :ayatollah:

No inside info, sorry! Just comments that I have been reading in football magazines and newspapers over the last year or two. Seems to be a recurring theme. There are concerns about the loss of atmosphere when there are not many away fans. There have been concerns about the cost of away tickets. Remember Man City fans having to pay £62 at the Emirates last season, and a boycott. I think that this scheme where we twin with another club, and reduce costs for agreed away games comes from that. We only paid £25.50 at Arsenal, and £32 at Liverpool recently. Not 100% sure, but it comes up often enough to show that the PL and TV companies are a bit concerned.

Its a sign of the times that a modern football fan simply given a choice of travelling down the m5 a few hours or sat in the house or pub using that £100 that it costs on away days they will opt to spend half the cash in the pub and have an indian after and be in bed by midnight ready for work the following morning its only the ever present like us who do every match daft or loyal call it what u want but im fortunate i have no work commitments or kids but dress it up whatever way u want tv has ruined football for the fans it just makes clubs and chairman richer that goes on better players then increased season ticket prices to pay for wages etc

Re: ' Shocked at Villa fans '

That's not too bad - they are playing shite football and probably have had enough of paying over the top premiership prices.
Im sure if we stay in the premiership a few years then our away support will dwindle off as well.
