Ole strange tactics / brilliant changes

Sat Feb 01, 2014 8:32 pm

From the start I couldn't work out what formation we were playing . It looked like a sort of 4-1-3-1-1 with Bellamy in a free role ahead of the midfield .

The strangest part for me was Jordan Mutch being played on the left for the first half hour . He was massively out of position and looked a lost sheep . Declan John was bombing down the line and had nobody to pass to due to mutch being out of position time and time again . Then when they were attacking John was left isolated as mutch tried to tuck infield instead of picking up the runner . But for the life of me I can't understand why he thought putting our best centre midfield runner on a wing was a good idea .

Massive credit to ole he saw the problems and adjusted it with Whittingham and mutch changing places which made a huge difference . Whittingham was awful which is a shame because he was class at old Trafford on Tuesday night . More credit to ole who again saw the problem and switched it with Saha coming on for him which then led to city changing to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation . What a difference it made .

I'm not sure about the Gunnarsson substitution because as soon as he came on we reverted to the Cardiff of the beginning of the season which is defend deep and try to hold out . I can see what he tried to do and it was correct but he probably chose the wrong player , I'm pretty sure that won't happen again .

People will say the win was all about Marshall and to be fair he was world class , but the sole and main reason we got back into the game and took the lead in the first place was down to our manager realising he had made a few tactical and positional mistakes and having the ability to change it at the right time .

The choice of picking Kenwyn Jones over Campbell seemed strange but once the game started you could see the reason for it , Norwich just couldn't cope with his height and power . With Campbell I don't think we would have been the same threat going forward against there defence Due to the lack of service from centre midfield , unfortunately mainly whitts .

think we have a brilliant manager on our hands who is having a few teething problems with his squad at the start but is going to be one of the worlds most sought after managers in a few years .

Quality today ole , impresses me more and more every week :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

The question has to be asked tho thomas, is why did he start with mutch on the left in the 1st place. I think you started off spot on with your post, i to couldnt work out what formation we started with.
I do believe your getting carried away with Ole tho. I dont believe hes gonna be as good a manager as you think, but lets hope your right.

I think OGS was trying to accommodate Whitts as well as use the exciting Mutch. Mutch is versatile and OGS thought he could play on the left, it wasn't working and Whitts was having one of his very ordinary games. I think OGS will now leave Whitts out of the starting line up and go with Mutch and Medel in the middle with Bellars just behind Jones. My only concern is that we have Noone and Zaha, who are great going forward but offer very little cover, especially Noone who is always getting caught out and giving away free kicks. It puts huge pressure on our full backs. We could well be turning into a team that depends on scoring more goals than the opposition as we accept that every team will exploit those areas.

I think we will start seeing a 4-4-1-1 with Campbell or Bellamy playing behind jones . Medel and mutch in the centre . Rather than the formation we started with yesterday . Medel also looked a lot better further up the pitch next to mutch and actually had 2/3 attempts on goal

Very good analysis Thomasblue. Agree with that.

Whitts proved once again today that he should have been sold hope he isn't even in the squad for the Swansea game.

Medel looks so much better without Whittingham. Mutch Eikrem and Daehli could be big players for us from now on in midfield. Would love to see how a Jones/Campbell combination works upfront

Medel looked better without anyone in his space, when gunnarson came on we went to pieces

But you have barely seen Eikrem, and we have only seen a cameo role for Daehli...

Medel and Mutch looks bar far our best combination in the middle.
