OT Rheumatoid Arthritis

Thu Jan 23, 2014 11:22 pm

Still in hospital at the moment, and it looks as though I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. Does anyone know anything about it? I thought just old people got it. Been feeling shit for the beat part of two years. On a more positive note I am off my head on morphine at the momwnt and even the guy in the bed next to me snoring is not bothering me! :ayatollah:

I've got Psoriatic Arthritis. Had it since I've been 17. Just woke up one morning and my lower back was shot. Couldn't move pretty much. After a couple of days I could and went to the doctors and then onto a rheumatologist who diagnosed it pretty much straight away as one of my parents and grandmother had psoriasis and i was the unlucky bugger that got the arthritis along with it.

The basics

Gets worse in the cold - I go abroad in the summer which helps with the joints etc.
You'll be more prone to other illnesses such as colds
Do some light weights etc. in the gym - stop muscle wastage which will make things worse
Keep a good diet - try lactose free and gluten free - could help - try to find your trigger for flare ups

On the positive side having arthritis has made me more resilient as a person. If I can cope with this fine and get on in my life then nothings going to get me down at all. Honestly, it takes a whilst to adjust etc. but once you do you sort of just get on with things. I play football now and then and still go out etc. You just need to get in the frame of mind whereby you're going to beat it and live life. Once it stops you living as you want to do so its won.

Its why healthy lazy and bone idled people annoy me mate because theres people like myself and in worse off situations trying hard to get on with their life with the hand they've been dealt and then they're just sat on the dole claiming and doing nothing. What a waste.

I suffer with AK Ankylosing spondylitis, and have done since about 11 years of age.
Its was very hard for doctors to fine out what my problem was. back in 1974 ,I was in the first ever Tae Kwon Do Welsh Team and was taking my black belt in October and in the September the Docs finally after blood test found out what it was. They stopped me doing Tae Kwon Do cos of the damage I could do with kicks.

My AK, is very much like yours, if you can stay away from steroids and anti inflammatory s , ask them about an injection called Embrol . It knocks out your immune system and stops the fight that's going on in your body.

Also swimming can keep you mobile , I have a doctor I see in the heath whos name is Dr A Negie , he is brilliant and I do mean brilliant. Also check out support groups ,there are some on Face Book.

I have psoriatic arthritis and I believe both conditions are sort of of similar, once you start taking the medicine you have two options
1. wallow in self pity
2. just get on with it
If you go with option 2 you will be amazed how the aches and pains will just become part of everyday life dont get me wrong you will have days when you feel absolutely wiped out but you will come to accept this as part of your daily life, educating family and friends is the hardest part because they often see you as normal when you are managing the pain and cant understand the need to slow life down and take time out just to relax.

Good luck
