Medel, Wanyama, Huddlestone or Capoue?

Thu Jan 23, 2014 11:22 pm

Are you guys happy with Gary? If you could, would you swap him for any of the other midfielders we were linked with in the summer?

I'm edging on Wanyama as well.

I think when you consider his quality, young age and I don't normally like to think so short sighted but also his saleability I think we should have forked out that extra couple of million for him.

Wanyama. I wanted him in the summer. Gutted when we never got him. I remember people saying he was crap because he played for Celtic and was only beating the likes of St Mirren. Look how that worked out for you.

Wanyama has only played 14 games for Southampton this season. How people can say he's better than Huddlestone and Medel when he's only played 14 games this season is incredible.

I honestly think Medel is the best of the lot and he will start to thrive with more movement and fluidity in the midfield ahead of him. Southampton's team is full of energy and quality so it's easy for Wanyama to look comfortable there. Would he look so comfortable in our midfield however? I don't think so.

Huddlestone on the other hand has proven to be a very good buy for Hull, although his limitations will be exposed in the second half of the season when Hull have tough games at home. I still believe Hull will slide down the table and get sucked in when their home form goes. They've started the first half of the season well because they have taken points in their home games against teams down the bottom, beating a lot of them 1-0 with their sensible, well organised style of play (ring any bells?) You would think that would suit most fans, but our fans would say that's "too negative and not exciting enough, so let's throw away 5 points at home to Sunderland and West Ham instead by playing more open"

We were battering Sunderland when playing an open style. It was only when we adopted Malky style that we started to struggle and let them back in.

Before he done his ankle Capoue looked quality. Not getting a look in now. For value, it has to be Huddlestone.

Suarez, Van Persie and Aguero have proven theirselves to be the best strikers in the Premiership for several seasons. Wanyama has made just 14 appearances (league and cup) for Southampton this season. He has not yet made enough appearances at Premiership level to prove how good he is yet. I thought you would have been intelligent enough to grasp the point I was making.

So we are going on past experience then? Wanyama cant be any good because he only played for celtic?

No doubt for me he is the best of the three (cant judge capoue as ive only seen him play 1 game) can see him going on to a bigger club in the next few years

Yes, I am going by past experience. Judging every player, you look at their past experience, who they've performed against, what standard they're playing at, how consistant they are etc. Van Persie, Aguero and Suarez have consistantly performed tearing apart the best teams in world football. Wanyama had great one off games against Barcelona and Inter in the Champions League for Celtic, but every Celtic player raises their game in the Champions League.

You can't make a proper judgement on Wanyama until he's had a couple of seasons in the Premiership. Then we can judge whether he's a good player at Premiership level, an average player, a poor player, an inconsistant player etc. Michu looked fantastic last season when jumping up from the Spanish second division to the Premiership, but he's since been found out and has been poor this season so far. So saying you think Wanyama is the best of that list after just 14 games at Premiership level is a very bold call to make indeed. Personally, I'm very happy we have Medel. Not many players can man to man mark Messi out of the game and the Southampton game showed how much we depend on him.

Agree with this.

Also think Huddlestone would fit into the way Ole likes to play

I think this post misses the point, with Huddleston's only costing 5m who should we have signed as well as him

No way. Wanyama's best work is off the ball. Passing isn't great at all and even the Saints fans say that. Capoue waste of space and Huddlestone has been fantastic to be fair. I'd still take Medel though.

Wanyama cost Southampton, what, £12m?

Not exactly setting the world alight with them, is he?

Dodged a bullet there!

Apparently Capoue is already facing the exit door at Spurs. Would love to see him here though, could add a bit more solidarity and ability to rotate to the midfield.

Wanyama all day.. Huddlestone a very close 2nd.

I can understand why certain people criticise medal - the high price tag for a player who isn't going to score a lot of goals

If you ignore his transfer fee then anyone would have to agree he is a brilliant asset to the team and defiantly one of our top 3 best performers for this season

A lot more to come from him as well IMO - I think he is the best out of the four mentioned

People saying Wanyama has done nothing are quite moronic, he has been injured for 2 months.

Up until them he was quality and adapting well. They've missed him a lot.
