I think its all relative plus its January. He could be the difference between 4th or not so if they get 4th its paid dividends. Is he worth £40m? I don't think so but footballers are expensive these days. When they splashed £25m+ on Fellaini as well they set a precedent. Is Mata better than him? Yes. He's therefore going to cost more and Chelsea will demand more. When you include the January premium on top of that then it seems to make sense. United will pay extra now for not getting in the required player in the summer so its pretty much their own fault.
