brothers done loads of ours and we have a big family from both sides ,is hard at first but of you can get as much info as possible it helps ,try and at least get your grandparents details and if poss your great grandparents as if you can find them on the census you have a chance of picking up more info, also try the glamorgan records office down by the city ,you can also register and use your info on ancestry.co.uk and other sites ...good luck.

No probs but dont expect miracles and to find things straight away ,sometimes it can take a while ,have patience ,sometimes you wont get much info then it'll start falling into place ,we've done pretty good with the dates we have gone back to on some side back to 1700's

Are there any free online websites or are they fee only?

The so called free ones only give basic information and you have to purchase credits to get the more detailed info.

if you got the money to burn pay ancestry a few hundred quid and they do it for you.

Start with your parents then go back, ask your oldest relative who he/she can remember. Ancestry gives 2 weeks free, you have to register and give debit/credit card details if you cancel before the 2 weeks they don't take your money. If you want some help message me.

start with your local library.....it should have lots of books for beginners....your local library will have free access to both ancestry.com and findmypast.co.uk

go with what you know then check again.....somethings are often hushed up or kept quiet.....good luck...it can be a lot of fun

I've done it and my mother-in-law is shit hot at it.My advice would be to join a society(forum)that does that sort of thing. It can be great fun but also exasperating as if you miss or interpret one piece of info wrong it can cost you weeks/months of reserch.

Go to the closest Mormon church and ask them, they are the world's experts with huge a huge family records database - generally nice people as well.

The cheapest way is to go to the Mormon church in Rhiwbina Cardiff, on the corner of Heol Llanishen Fach they have all the records of births marriages and deaths, plus Census, baptism, and all Church records, just make a small donation to their funds [but not compulsory ] you will find they are really willing to help you.

There is also a meeting of people who are willing to help you get started with this, held in St Marks church in North Road Cardiff,Meeting are held the first tuesday of the month

Here are 2 free sites on the internet,

Once you get stuck on perhaps your great grandparents, try and find out when they got married as you can order a copy of their Marriage cert, it will give you their parents and it's nice to have, I haven't got any lately but they were £7.50 each, been doing mine for years, back to early 1700's on my mothers side (Norway and Wales/England) and 1820's on my fathers (Wales/Ireland). You will almost certainly find a distant relative also doing the tree and you will get loads of info, don't get disheartened, I have been doing mine for years, when your stuck leave it for a while and go again.

Start by deciding what family you wish to trace. Do you want to trace
(a) Just the paternal line - your father, his father etc?
(b) Your mother's maiden name family?
(c) The whole family - that's 4 families at grandparent level, 8 families at great grant parent level?

I traced back to the 1200 hundreds, I've got Ghengis Khan and Joan of arc in my bloodline. Along with some guy called Vincent van gogh.
