Dalman looking after Tan and his money

Mon Jan 20, 2014 7:33 pm

This was in Planet football last week

Cardiff City

five days after chairman Mehmet Ddalman reassured cardiff fans that their hero, manager malkey mackay, would remain in place for the foreseeable future, malkey was sacked by malaysian owner vincent tan. but then dalman has a way of knowing whose side to be on when it comes to the rich and powerful.

take his role at scandal-tainted mining group ENRC. dalman faithfully served the interest of the three central asian oligarchs who controlled ENRC from when it was floated in 2007. he had previously been an adviser to one of the trio. when the oligarchs forced out two independant directors in 2011. dalman stayed. indeed he became chairman in feb 2012, paid £530,000 a year -comPared with just £130.000 as a non-exec-with a supposed mandate to clear up the mess.

an internal investigation revealed allegations of fraud and corruption. the SFAO moved in and dalman moved out in april last year with the mess worse not better. the oligarchs response was to screw the shareholders with a cut price buyout. clearly dalman knows hoe to give the rich what they want.

Dalman has always struck me as a smooth talking, snakey type of guy. Found this article, it a couple of years old, but is interesting to hear others' opinions on Dalman as a man.

Mehmet Dalman and the Oligarchs
February 2, 2011

Mehmet Dalman who was recently appointed as chairman of the London-listed Kazakh miner, Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation, is no stranger to controversy. In a move that saw the departure of Johannes Sittard, Mehmet was seen as having fulfilled his long term dream. Mehmet was born in western Cyprus on April 7, 1958, the son of Shoukru Ali and Souzie Djevtet. He is registered with the Financial Services Authority as Mehmet Shoukru-Dalman.

Mehmet Dalman took an MA at the London School of Economics in 1981 under the name of Mehmet Shoukru following which he joined the investment banking industry four years later at Nikko. He later worked for Crédit Lyonnais and Deutsche Bank in Japan, before joining Commerzbank in 1997. As head of Commerzbank , the firm’s securities business was hit hard by the downturn in capital markets, making a Securities a loss of €348m ($395m) out of a group loss of €372m. After quitting Commerzbank Mr Dalman joined Toscafund as vice chairman. In January of 2012, Mehmet Dalman left hedge fund firm Toscafund to focus on a directorship at ENRC.

This is the same Dalman who in 2011 was at the centre of a corporate governance storm at ENRC when long-running tensions between the group’s founder shareholders and some board members spilled over into a public spat. Two well-known independent non-executive directors were voted off the board, leaving Dalman and Paul Judge as the only remaining UK non-executive board members. Sources say that Dalman was the brains behind these spats in his quest for the top job. The turmoil saw deputy chairman Sir Richard Sykes and non-executive director Ken Olisa removed from the board.

Mr Dalman is known to be slippery, sly and conniving. Together with his good friend and former work colleague Miguel Perry, he is believed to have caused more tension than harmony at ENRC. Some share holders quietly expressed disbelief and discontentment at the appointment of Mr Dalman. As with former CFO Miguel Perry, Mr Dalman is known to enjoy confidence of the crooked oligarch trio that control ENRC. Mehmet and Miguel have been hosted to lavish parties and gifts from the Oligarch trio and Miguel Perry is said to have received a golden handshake when he departed ENRC. Although no longer with the organisation, Miguel Perry still yields influence and close friendship with many of the senior managerial staff members. It is left to see in which direction Dalman steers the company in the face of all the scandals embroiling the organisation.

And he eventually quit during the controversy and left ENRC. Says a lot about the guys character, jumping ship to save his neck.

Wont copy and paste the article as it's long enough but the guardian did a good article on Dalman quitting ENRC.

I'm more interested in how he performs for OUR club instead of digging up old negative news on the chairman...

Bored of the agendas on here BIG TIME!

People are surprised by this? Mostly old news. Tan's got plenty of bad things said about him too online.

No agenda, just stating my opinion on Dalman and backing it up with an article on how I have formed my judgments on his character :ayatollah:

Hope he does well for us, although the 'forseeable future' episode has cast doubts on his integrity and trustworthiness in my mind!
