But obviously he should not be farmed out with our squad as it is. Given Taylor's injury status, he should probably stay put now for this season...

Exactly. Cowie was a scapegoat, then Taylor, and now Whittingham.
I think he's generally pretty consistent, but the step up to the Premier League is challenging. As you say, clubs are always looking to improve on what they have, but left-backs are a rare breed.
