Ive said my opinion many times on Peter Whittingham, Class, but laid back, goes missing and not consistent, Hopefully this will give Whitts a kick up the back side and some fire in him. :ayatollah:

Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham determined to fight for his place after Norwegian signings
17 Jan 2014

Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli have been signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring extra creativity to the City midfield

Peter Whittingham is ready to pick up the midfield gauntlet thrown down by Cardiff City’s two Norwegian signings.

Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Mats Moller Daehli have been signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to bring extra creativity to the City midfield – but the new Bluebirds boss insists Whittingham is an important part of his plans and says it’s not a direct Whittingham v Eikrem or Whittingham v Daehli battle through the middle.

“Peter has been here for many a long time and performed at a very good and high level,” said Solskjaer.

“Now I want to push him even more, push him further. He can believe more that he is where he belongs at Premier League level.

“When we bring players (Eikrem and Daehli) in they compete within a group of 25 to get into the starting 11.

“It’s not one against one. At Manchester United it was never me against Andy Cole or Teddy Sheringham or Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“We were together, we wanted to take our club forward and it’s the same here. We are a team and we all want to stay in the Premier League.”

Solskjaer hinted that Whittingham will start at Manchester City today, speaking highly of his set-piece delivery and how important they are to Cardiff.

Whittingham, in turn, believes the challenge from Eikrem and Daehli will help his own game.

“The two lads look good, they want the ball,” he said. “The manager is always saying he needs players who want the ball.

“We know we need a big squad to stay in this league. It’s a matter of using everyone we’ve got and hopefully the new guys can do well for us.

“There is always competition. It’s good they have been brought in.

“They look good in training and hopefully they will bring some good news for us.”

There was a period of tension and uncertainty for the players when former boss Malky Mackay was under pressure before the change of manager.

But Whittingham said Mackay did all he could to protect the players from what was happening away from the football.

Magnus Wolff Eikrem

“There was not really much we could do about it,” he said.

“Malky kept a lot of it to himself and did not really trouble the players.

“That was good, but as players ourselves we could not really affect anything in those terms.

“We were on the outside and we could only do what was happening on the pitch. But a decision had to be made, whichever way it was going to be.

“It would probably be an easy way out to say the situation affected the boys.

“We didn’t play well at the time and failed to pick up results. That led people to a kind of blame thing, but it was nothing to do with that.”

Solskjaer’s influence is gradually being imposed at the club and Whittingham revealed there is a freshness about the new regime.

“He’s brought a fresh impetus with him,” he said.

“He speaks to the players a lot, tells them what he wants from them and how he wants them to go about things.

“The manager is calm and wants to talk to the players which is good. He’s got his people around him who know his ideas and what he wants to do.

“It’s going to be a hard game at Manchester City, there is no getting away from that fact.

“But it’s a case of sticking to the game plan, the manager has said what he wants to happen and let’s hope that works.”

Whittingham, however, insists that it’s impossible to defend for 90 minutes against hosts who have scored 38 times in 10 home league games and 99 in all competitions this season.

“It’s a case of taking our chances when they come because, make no mistake, we are going to have chances,” he said.

“Yes, we will have to ride our luck a little bit because, let’s be honest, they are Manchester City and they are going to have chances of their own. But maybe we are due a little bit of luck.

“It’s not just about us defending against them. If you play that deep against these players it would only be a matter of time before they unlock the door.

“When we get the ball we need to keep it and frustrate them. We know what is needed and what we have to do, this is what we were promoted for.

“Everybody probably expected us to be in and around this position anyway. It’s not a huge surprise and what we can take comfort from is just how close it is.

“There are effectively two leagues. You have a mini-league around yourself and that was probably the most disappointing thing about losing against West Ham.

“That was in our little mini-league. But it’s a case of bouncing back against Manchester City – and we can’t wait to take on the challenge.”

I hope he comes through but I'm pretty sure he won't.

Whitts was dropped at the end of last season, and he behaved like the good professional that he is. No transfer requests, no throwing his toys out of the pram, no going missing for weeks and months with 'personal matters' like some prima-donnas we could mention.

If OGS drpos him again, then I'm pretty sure that Whitts will carry on being as professional as ever. That's what good pros do.

One day, Peter Whittingham will get the credit he deserves. He's already done more for Cardiff City than most of our so-called 'legends'!

Anyone see his interview today?

Asked about Man City, he said something like... "They were lacking a bit of form and we hope to capitalise on it" :D

Maybe it'll help the lazy c**t bother having a midfield presence to change the game.

Because right now I think Eikrem should just get straight in with it.

This doesn't bode well for the rest of our season

You won't change Whitts laid ask style, that's him.

I think he has done fine this season tbh. I'm hoping Solskjaer can use him more to his strengthen. I think his season as a defensive midfielder (not sure why?) has ruined his confidence.

Agreed! He's been excellent for us but because he doesn't jump into tackles he's shit! Get him centrally and closer to Campbell

hes a Cardiff city legend for what hes done for us past the few years. Tremendous pro but never a wide man,he needs to play central or not at all in my opinion

i think Malkys idea was, our back four were stoppers not ball players, and Marshalls distribution isnt the best,so i think his thoughts were put Whitts there to distribute..................just my thoughts
i believe we missed out the other end tho

yes,he liked to play whitts in that quarterback position which meant we were just not getting the best out of him
Often hed be the worst player on the pitch then either score or set up a goal with a superb set piece so you can see why hes a hard player to drop
I think with bellers appearing to be as good as ever we don't need to be so reliant on peter wittinghams dead ball abilities

Re: ' Peter Whittingham '

Whitts is a true pro, call him lazy or whatever you like but it's just his style. He lobes this city and has given us years of service and some quality memories, when he retires he will be known as a 'Cardiff legend'

Re: ' Peter Whittingham '

English bluebird I think saying bellers appears to be as good as ever after a decent 45 mins is a bit over the top lol

Re: ' Peter Whittingham '

Whitts is absolute class. Yes, he does go missing but I'd rather have him in the team than without.....these signings can only be good for City.
For the first time since we signed him, Whitts has competition.....brilliant. :old:

He's played around 300 games for us and could easily have bailed out in the Dave Jones years. What is it with people like you who can slag off a great servant like Whitts like that? I really despair!

I believe that was Malky's thinking. Many on here have perpetuated the myth that he was being asked to do the job of a defensive midfielder, but I think that Malky simply wanted him to be that 'quarterback' sort of player.

I understand that was the intention but it never worked and destroyed Whitts as a player and attacking force.

How many times did I see Whitts drop deep, To receive the ball to one them lay it off to Turner.

Whittingham reminds me of Morten Gamst Pedersen. Being the manager of such a player must be agony, because he brings so much to set pieces and dictating the transition play, but is figuratively invisible in every other aspect.

I do think that every team has room for a player like that, even in the Prem. Maybe he just needs a little bit of adaptation to a different role.

Whitts is a quality and loyal player to city, he couldve easily pushed through a transfer to a premier league club especially the season when he scored 20+

But give him credit for sticking with us and provided us with many jaw dropping free kicks and deliveries but now he has to prove himself on the premier league stage, I can understand fans frustrations with his limited pace and drive within games, however I feel he's been played in a position out wide which doesn't suit him, he needs to play a more central role and allowed freedom to
Move into space where his passing ability will count for more.

The arrival of Eikrem and daehli can only be of benefit to his motivations and now we have other quality midfielders to turn to as well as Whitts and Mutch. Let's hope our midfield can hit the heights of their ability and get our teams to dictate games through the middle and Whitts I believe can play a vital part In this.

In stats Whitts is by some way CCFC's most creative player...

This will a lot be in part down to the fact that he is one of the very best corner kick takers in the PL imho...

I actually think he might enjoy having a player like Woolf-Eikrem in the squad to ease the pressure on himself somewhat....I think Whitts fluxuates with his form so having another player to take his place will benefit him, and when selected he will be ready to put in the performances we all know he is capable of when a little more rested and sure of himself :ayatollah:
