Sorry but I just don't get it?

Wed Jan 15, 2014 6:04 pm

You've always been Known as 'Cardiff City the Bluebirds' yeah? Hull have always been known as 'Hull City the Tigers' and we've always been Swansea City/Town and known as the Jacks.
Now if Vincent Tan came out tomorrow (past rebrands aside) and said he wanted to change your name to Cardiff Bluebirds, would you really have a problem with that? I know that if Hugh Jenkins stated that he wanted to change us too Swansea Jacks, i'd kinda be quite pleased to be honest, and proud! I'm sure that hull have always been proud to be known as the Tigers so I'm sorry I really don't get why they are kicking up such a stink? :?

It just don't sit right with me, even tho I'd prefer cardiff bluebirds and us be in blue than red. Imagine Man utd called Manchester Devils, destroys the history of a club in a way.

Agreed.

I'd be fine with Cardiff Bluebirds.

Hull Tigers are making a big fuss over nothing. Its not like he's turned them into Hull Zebra's and given them a white and black kit just because he went on a safari in the summer is it?

I see your point, but Man utd are Man utd! They are an institution, if Hulls owner believes he can raise the profile of the club by changing there name to include the city name and nickname then as fans who appreciates what he's done for them (as indeed they do), I really wouldn't create such a fuss in the way they have?

I would prefer Hull's situation to our situation, but it's still a huge deal. The name, the crest, the nickname and the colours of a club are the identity of the club. Badges change now and again which can be acceptable in my opinion, but the name and the colours of any club should never change unless there's a valid reason (i.e Swansea's status changing from town to city).

Nonsense. Hull fans are proud of their tradition, history and identity and don't want it extinguished from their club. I would have thought as a Cardiff fan, you would completely understand why Hull fans are kicking up a fuss! The name and badge defines the identity of every football club. If Hull's name is changed to Hull Tigers, their club has died in my opinion. A name change is just as bad, probably even worse than the ridiculous rebrand we are going through. Good luck Hull CITY!

as i have posted before most ordinary hull fans dont object to tigers as been stated, they are known by that anyway! even bruce doesnt object and is actually in favour if read between lines. its the supporters trust/club that is voicing objections, it hasnt done other institutions in rugby league, ice hockey ect who went down way of using nick names any harm, man u ect ect are a different kettle of fish as those teams are already a global brand,. think maybe people are getting carried away because of what has happened to us. :old:

Get a grip.

They're Hull City - The Tigers as it is. Al they're doing really is dropping City and 'the', a useless word. If anything, it just makes their brand image stronger and reinforces (a) where they're from and (b) the emblem that they fly, in this case the tiger. They should be proud of the tiger as its part of their history.

Why on Earth is that bad for their history?

Why does city need to be in their name? Everyone knows Hull is a bloody city, you don't need to be a geographer to work that one out FFS.

I'd be fine with Cardiff Bluebirds FC because 1. Im proud we're from Cardiff and 2. Im proud of the bluebird flying the flag for the city and its people. I myself am a bluebird and having the name of my club incorporate that only reinforces the bond between the club and the fans. City means sod all to me. I could live in any city in the world but being a bluebird MEANS LOADS TO ME. IT MEANS MORE THAN ANY SUFFIX LIKE CITY DOES.

Im proud of Cardiff and Im proud to be a bluebird. Cardiff Bluebirds FC makes fine sense in that respect and links together the two things I'm proud of.

If you cant accept that then thats up to you. I don't really care.

Allan, you've come out with some brilliant posts lately. Credit where its due.

The point in bold is what many fail to understand. Manchester Utd is already a marketers dream which is why the Glazers went for them as a package and not someone else. Of course that was due to success, great players and history but other clubs who haven't got that need to use every marketing trick in the book to try and edge and scrape a market share in a very competitive field.

'64'. I never heard the phrase 'Jacks until the late 80's' - until then it was always 'The Swans'. Did it change before that.

You seemed to rebrand yourselves, but shouldn't it now be Jack bast@@@s as you have 'borrowed' our chant toward you ?

didn't say posting was boring, just the same old topic re-worded differently to make it look like its something new! :old:

If we survive the season and remain in the premiership, maybe we can persuade his tanship that red isn;t so lucky after all and blue actually is luckier - re man city, chelsea etc

Miracles happen but for now lets hope we get one for survival!!

Lawnmower, to be honest, your quite correct. When I was growing up I never heard the term Jacks. It was always proud to be a swan etc, from memory, I believe we only started calling ourselves Jacks, when we began to play you on a regular basis 79 onwards, when you used it towards us as a derogatory term. Nevertheless, it caught on and we obviously turned it around in our favour. But the term 'jack' definitely came from you lot. :thumbright:

I agree with what you said in your OP its not even close to a full rebrand.

It is, I just wonder if there would be the same outrage, if it was a local lifelong fan of Hull City initiating the name change, rather than a 'foreigner' (Even though he's lived in the City since 1968)?

Re: Sorry but I just don't get it?

What they are doing at Hull is no different to what they done in Rugby League.

Teams kept their traditional colours and crest plus the name of their town / city they just added their nickname to their name.

Nowhere near as bad or controversial as what has happened to us.

Re: Sorry but I just don't get it?

Wed Jan 15, 2014 7:26 pm

I think it's better Cardiff bluebirds fc,Manchester devils fc etc etc.
Every team should incorporate a nickname into the name, people shouldn't be afraid of change they should embrace it,it's a good idea Imo.

I meant from that point onwards but for the sake of debate, i'll continue to respond.

I'd be happy seeing Cardiff Bluebirds vs Swansea Jacks yes. I'd be happy for them to build it up as the Bluebirds vs the Jacks. It'd be amazing.

What im not happy with is the complete removal of our brand identity which Tan has pretty much done. Hull haven't had that so to compare the situations is bordering on the absurd.

Im not the one whos bonkers, you are pal. You think Hull keeping their own nickname, emblem and colours is the same as us having ours taken piece by piece and yes our nickname is trying to be taken before some smarty pants comes into the thread to say we're still the bluebirds. For how long though? How long? We're already informally the dragons to many people and thats a fact.

Hull have got it easy. A bunch of drama queens trying to pretend to make a stand against Modern Football to get the media and other fans behind them. I hope the FA do reject it, he withdraws within 24 hours and they go through or end up struggling. I can assure you, that if thats the way it goes he'll asset strip them first - Long and Jelavic will be gone in the next window and others will follow them no problem. Hes in control so he will do it and then he'll be gone and cut his losses.

If Hull want to bite the hand that feeds over something so idiotic then let them. They've lost nothing other than City in their name and they're crying. A bunch of drama queens who should all audition for parts in Grease 3 or the next Mamma Mia if its ever made.
