DVP REPORT: CORNELIUS GRABS LATE WINNER

PUBLISHED
21:05 13th January 2014

Cardiff City manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was at the Cardiff City stadium to watch the Cardiff City DVP match.

City striker's near post finish beats Eagles at Cardiff City Stadium

A late strike from City forward Andreas Cornelius was enough to claim all three points for Kevin Cooper's Development squad and send them back to the top of the PDL2 South table.

Sullay Kaikai had given the Eagles an early lead as his sixth minute effort from close range beat 'keeper Joe Lewis, an advantage they held until half time. Rhys Healey quickly pulled City level following the interval however, before Cornelius grabbed a late winner with a neat near post finish in stoppage time.

Updated

Cardiff stood strong as Palace played counter attacking football to good effect in the first period and came out for the second half in fighting spirits, levelling the game within a minute of the restart. Forward Rhys Healey with a superb swivel turn in the penalty area before smashing the ball into the back of the net to the delight of the watching crowd.

The Bluebirds controlled the majority of the second period and probably should have taken the lead after eighty three minutes. Luke Coulson crossing fantastically from the right for Andreas Cornelius, the Danish striker heading over the crossbar from close range. Cornelius went even closer to grabbing his goal three minutes later, diverting the ball towards the back of the Palace net only for Welsh keeper Lewis Price to incredibly push the ball away from goal at the final second.

Joe Lewis continued his heroics at the other end, denying substitute Allassani and forward Wilbraham in quick succession as both sides searched for the all-important winning goal. The match’s third goal coming deep into stoppage time with the impressive Theo Wharton crossing for striker Cornelius to stab the ball home from close range.

It still took a late block from the returning Deji Oshilaja in the game’s final moments to keep City ahead, but Kevin Cooper’s men held on for a deserved win that sees them move three points ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion at the top of Professional Development League Two South.

Teams - Cardiff City: Lewis, Coulson, Owen, Williams, Yorwerth, Oshilaja, Wharton, Healey, Cornelius, O’Sullivan, Bowen. Subs Not Used: Nugent, Wilson, Bell, Hawkins, Griffiths.

Goals: Healey (46), Cornelius (90)

Crystal Palace: Price, Gordon, Dymond, Boateng, McCarthy (Chambers, 71), Taylor, Kaikai, Campana, Sow (Sekajja, 19(Allassani, 75), Wilbraham, De Silva. Subs Not Used: Gregory, George.

Only the DVP I know but will do the lad good to get a goal. Give him a bit of confidence.

Where I'd Etien, he still involved?

Seems sad a decent prospect wasting away for money.

It's a shame many fans have turned on Cornelius so soon...not sure how many minutes he has played but it's not that many. He didn't set his transfer fee,he was chosen by Malky and his recruitment team, they offered the millions and the high wages,he jumped at the chance.
I have not seen him do much in those minutes apart from a great header at Cheltenham but I think he should be given more time before he is judged...but the transfer fee was huge for a prospect player in my opinion.

That's how I see it. He's had 10 mins now and again to impress which is always going to be hard

Paul
He was considered to be overweight and not anywhere match fit hence his playing time tonight. I believe ole will give him every opportunity to make an impact

Corky it did not help what Tan did regarding Cornelius.

I was told a long time ago, he was not ready for Prem by someone from Denmark who knows his football and best friends with the Jack Manager who also had said the same. Fingers crossed though

Re: Ole Solskaer watches Cornelius strike the winner tonight

Ultimately, his transfer fee is a stone around his neck and people are using it as a stick to beat him with. He's short on confidence and hasn't had the chance to do much in the short time he's played. He needs a good few games to get up to speed, and provided we stay up, a loan spell in the Chanpionship next year...

Re: Ole Solskaer watches Cornelius strike the winner tonight

Mon Jan 13, 2014 10:39 pm

The pressure on the lad has been immense from the start. I think he said around the time of the Forest Green friendly that his pricetag didn't bother him but it obviously does for him to make that statement. Not the best DVP game tonight with a noticeable lack of urgency in the first half, akin to the first teams performance versus WH. This is not like City and Ole stated he will be addressing it, as for me its an issue that has crept into our game lately and something we have not seen often. Maybe the off-field shenanigans have had some affect, I don't know but I'm sure we will be back firing on all cylinders in terms of focus/effort pretty soon. Stand out tonight was Oshilaja and the Newport spell has really benefited him, he needs to go back out on loan IMO as he's a decent prospect. So Cornelius tonight could/should have scored two other clear opportunities from close-in and you could see his frustration. But, he was not getting the service that a tall, strong target man needs as Coopers tactics seemed to have been to play pretty passing football and walk it through the centre. Mixing pacey wing play with crosses/long balls along with passing play would have been better (and obvious) and given AC service, as he didn't get that tonight for sure. He needs game time now but will need service else is wasted. Oh, and Joe Lewis pulled off some excellent reaction saves which kept us in the game.

I'm a bit disappointed in Malky if Cornelius' fitness in't up to scratch, that was always the one thing that Malky would 100% demand of his players.

You have to take into account the amount of time he was out injured as well and it would take a fair bit of time to catch up with the players, who would have had a full pre season and umpteen Premier League games!

True, but it would have been worth getting Cornelius going in a few development matches to up his match minutes.

I don't think the DVP games have been coming so thick and fast over the last few weeks, so I suspect that the club would have had to arrange friendly matches and as we've only just cleared the Xmas and New Year period, I can see why it would have been difficult for him to get a decent run out!

I have been reading this forum for years with great interest but until now have never had the urge to put my thoughts to text. I am disappointed how fickle we have become. I can't believe how quickly our supporters have turned on someone so young from a different country and as struggled with injury since pre season yet the knives are out. He could end up being the biggest flop since Ingram but he could come good. I'm sure we can all name players who struggled to start but turned good but this boy doesn't seem as if he's going to get a chance. Whatever happened when we got behind our new signings when they struggled to adapt. Steve "lethal" lynex was awful to start but he got a chant. I know times change but I think any striker would struggle in our squad we just don't create enough for our front men is that is fault coming on for the last ten minutes invariably when we are chasing a game. The whole squad need our support at the moment. We all have our opinions and favourites and players we would rather not be on the pitch, but whoever represents us let's give them our support not abuse.

Good first post mate, a lot of people on here forget that we have jumped up a big step to this league and unfortunately, we're playing catch up when it comes to the majority of teams in the league, as there are many already established teams, who have had umpteen transfer windows to add to and tweak their squad!

We've had one window and 2 weeks, when bringing in any new player(s) is always a gamble, as you also need a lot of luck, to go with the necessary time consuming scouting missions! :ayatollah:

People in denial and just don't want to accept Malky tied up over £20m in such a crap player.

£8m fee rising to around £10-11m with add ons plus his 5 year wage comes to around £11.7m in total.

What a waste of cash. With that money we could have bought both Ince and Finnbogason so if we go down its pretty much Malky's and Moody's fault imo. They had a job to do, bring in good enough players to contribute and keep us up and instead they've bought a bunch of bums in reality, Caulker and Medel aside. Odemwingie clearly after the last pay cheque as well.

The thing is, Scandinavians are very demanding and straight up people so if any of them act up then Ole is going to either give them the Fergie treatment or tell them where to go. He'll make sure every single one wants to play for the shirt and if they don't then they'll be facing the hair dryer treatment.

I'm still faithful and think he can come good, but not this season. He's too raw, Nathan Blake said it he looks like he hasn't been coached properly and anyone who knows football can see he lacks finesse and doesn't look comfortable. For 9 mill weather he's 20 or not, in our first prem year we needed a goal scorer and for the money/wages they are out there, love malky to bits but a bit over keen with this one I think in our position

Re: Ole Solskaer watches Cornelius strike the winner tonight

Tue Jan 14, 2014 8:24 am

Maybe it won't work out for him at City and maybe the money we paid will be too much. However, there is NO WAY any of us fans can judge his ability yet based on a handful of appearances where he's given minimal pitch time.

Here's a few "crap" players and their goal droughts:

Diego Forlan went 26 games without a goal at Man Utd - He then signed for Villareal and then Athletico where he had a better than 1 in 2 record at both clubs (128 goals in 240 games)
Peter Crouch 19 games without a goal for Liverpool - the same season he ended up with a tally of 13
Alan Shearer once went 12 games without an England goal and still ended up with a 1 in 2 record for them

Re: Ole Solskaer watches Cornelius strike the winner tonight

Tue Jan 14, 2014 8:28 am

there is no doubt whatsoever that he was a waste of the money paid and still paying to him.

Having said that he is here now, hopefully the goal would have done him some good and he will start against Bolton next week,.

How could you have bought Ince and Finnbovsan for that money? Their 5 year wages would akso have been about £12m each plus bith rated at £8m i make that £40m
