Don't get me wrong he's a great shot stopper but his overall game lets him down and I feel we'd benefit from getting another keeper who can actually keep Marshall on his toes. His commandment of the box is quite poor, he still stays on his line when keepers get all the protection in the world he doesn't use that to his advantage, he doesn't control his defenders well and his distribution is awful, takes so long to get rid of the ball. Not saying it's all doom and gloom but he's not as good as made out

Have to agree with you on this, In this day and age a keeper has to be like a extra player and his distribution is to be honest very poor.Agree a great shot stopper from distance but far too quiet and like you say does not command the box, imo very similar characteristics to when we had Neil Alexander back in the day.

distribution needs to improve, would like to see a quicker ball from him....but has kept us in so many games....

I'm not too sure on this Nyland who we've been linked to, very young but sometimes when you give young keepers a chance they prevail i.e Hart and Butland. I agree entirely though, as a keeper you are given so much protection by the officials but remains like a statue on his line when he should be capturing that ball all day long, you've got to be confident as a keeper and be the master of your defence, you can't just expect the men in front of you to do the job, you need to be an extra player at times like you said. He makes some unreal saves at times and has got us a few points on his own with his great reactions but at this level you need to adapt to the pace

I can't remember too many games where we have conceded from set piece crosses or corners ?
How many times has he dropped the ball or missed a cross ?
How many times has a ball come in that he should have come for and didn't then we conceded ?
I think he's done alright and his distribution is improving all the time , he's learning the same as everybody else , he is a top quality keeper and deserving of his chance to play in the premier league IMO

i dont think tan thinks that...............so in a nut shell............you know less than him

he doesnt come for many crosses tbh..........when have you seen him clutching the ball on the ground having been bumped in a crowd ? doesnt happen...he only comes when its none contact........admit he is having a descent season, but is by no means flawless.
the learning thing..........everyone is f*cking learning at this club..........250 league apps, 35 for Celtic, 10 for his country.......

His kicking is poor. Also he needs a strong player to mark the player who is trying to put pressure on him.
Apart from that then I have no more negatives.

Bit harsh lads. His distribution could certainly improve but he's been outstanding all season. There are other players in the team who need to make huge improvements, not Marshall.

Has been superb this season, but he should have saved Noble's shot yesterday.

Only position in my opinion i can't fault! His kicking could be improved other than that been top this season and was up there with the best last!
Really rate Marshall

Be interesting to see what happens.... Marshall requested Jim Holman as his GK Coach.
Your managers brought his own in
could be something in that.

Most ridiculous post ive read in a while. How can people criticise a player who has earned us more points this season than any other player. Seriously, all your points you have made are complete bull shit, no he's certainly not the best keeper in the world, but stop trying to find all the minor weaknesses in our players ffs! So what if his distribution isn't the best, it's not like it's so bad that its costing us games. People like you shouldnt post.

anyone who criticises Marshall after his heroics this season, needs to open their eyes.

Marshall is definitely as good as made out and doesn't deserve criticism. We've seen breath taking performances week in, week out for the last two seasons & he's made the transition to the PL seamlessly. Our best player by far. But, having a decent second GK makes sense - gives DM training/squad competition (not that he needs it) but we've been very reliant on Marshall's brilliance on too many occasions. If he picked up an injury it would be another major set-back for us.

No player is immune from criticism

Where have I said otherwise? As I've already said, anyone who looks at our squad and feels Marshall deserves criticism, is frankly, daft.

I think he has been exceptional this season.
I’ve only seen limited of Lewis but he has never impressed me much to be honest and if bringing in another keeper it means we can send Moore out on loan then it may not be the worst idea. I just don’t think a keeper is needed right now.

I think that people are being a bit over sensitive about other people's opinions here and IMO, Marshall is not as good as he has been made out to be!
He's been exceptional at shot stopping, but he has failings like most other goalkeepers!

Thank you! Exactly my point, glad a few agree that maybe a keeper whose actually good would be able to challenge Marshall and keep him on his toes and be a good back-up as well if Marshall gets injured. We're going to implement a whole new style of play and sometimes Marshall is going to have to adapt and I've not been impressed with his commanding of his box etc, he's rooted to his line!

This does remind me of the old Alexander threads, everyone wanted better and then we didnt successfully replace him for several years. and I never really rated Alexander as highly as others.

The thing is, clubs should always look to improve on what they've already got, within their budget of course!
Alexander refused to sign a new contract, so we had no choice but to let him go and any new acquisition is always going to be a gamble!
I've no idea what this Nyland is like, other than the YouTube footage posted on here, but he looks a decent shot stopper, the same as Marshall, so if his all round game is better, I'd trust OGS's judgement!
