ATMOSPHERE: DRASTIC ACTION NEEDED

Sun Jan 12, 2014 3:58 pm

What bugged me yesterday as much as the poor performance was the general level of apathy inside the ground. To me, there was a lot of 'going through the motions' rather than genuine passion for the team. Some observations:

1) The build up was crap and all very 'last minute'. Show the mascots, sing Men of Harlech, wave the flags, Premier League song or whatever it is. All very twee and contributes very little to the atmosphere. We used to have 'Men of Harlech then 'Hey Jude' which used to help rack it up a bit. Now we can't even manage that FFS. Even with the words, very few sang Men of Harlech.

2) With 10 minutes to go before before kick off the ground was more than half empty. Most people in the concourses with Pie, Chips & a pint. Sadly, gone are the days when you HAD to get to the ground to find a good place and the singing started with a good 20 minutes to go before kick off.

3) Still too much bl**dy red. WTF are people thinking?

4) The crowd did get into it for a bit in the second half when city launched a wave of attacks. The team responded, we responded but it was not enough and didn't last long enough to put the spammers into a spin.

5) Songs sung don't last long enough. They drop off pathetically. Keep them going FFS.

I don't have a magic wand but do have a few thoughts as to 'why' and more importantly what could be done about it.

We're a consumer, 'done to' society where putting effort in is an alien concept.
It's about expectations. We expect the atmosph to be sh*t and so it is!

If we want a good atmosphere then we need to change expectations. How about starting with closing the food places and turning off the TV's in the concourses 15 minutes early? Get people in their seats earlier. Publicize this via the echo.
Turn off the feckin PA system and allow the fans to get the atmosph going. I know it can't be manufactured but we can change things for the better. Keep pressing for safe standing areas.

Thoughts?

Completely agree in point one about the ten minutes before the game. It's a chance to really ramp things up, but sorry the effort made by Ali and the club is just dreadful. It's Conference standard at best. Our slow starts will be down to lots if things, but getting the crowd worked up might just help, yet we make a mess of it.

Needs a totally new direction.

Werent you guys saying you had the best atmosphere in the Prem the other week? :?

I sit in the Ninian and I was watching the empty seats in the Canton from about a half hour before kick off. I really couldn't believe that only a few were filled. I noticed that when the players did their usual final warm up set right in the corner they got next to no applause (no fans there). Also as the players came out the Canton was still only half full, so we were never going to have a cracking start. I also looked around the Ninian as the players came out and that seemed quite full, so was yesterdays problem mainly with the Canton?

Unbelievable considering it was such a massive game and the first for a new manager. Ole had been talking all week about the passionate City fans. Must have thought he'd come on the wrong day.

Knew it wouldn't be long before the resident troll made an appearance.

We've had some great atmosphere's and some mediocre ones. Too many 'plastics' only up for the so called bigger teams. Depressing but true. How is the Library these days?

Yep seemed that the Canton was the slowest to fill up but the problem is all over the ground.
We need to get better at making our own entertainment instead of being entertained.

It's funny how everyone is quick to moan about the atmosphere but do f**k all about it themselves.

Really poor atmosphere and one of the worst in the prem for sure. Why? Too many people only come for the big games, plastic twats and a minority won't make a sound because they want us to lose every game due to the rebrand.

Some good points here.
I've said before that the big problem is people getting to their seats late. A typical example was the Man City game. Yes it was a one off but the seats were filled well in advance & the best atmosphere I've seen at the stadium was created.
Also, all this leaving up to 10 minutes before half time to have a coffee or a beer? What's all that about?
People stream out.
Is it that important or are they not real fans?

Good points raised.

We are a divided fanbase, so it isn't easy, but I think the Canton needs to step up to the plate more.

I like the 'sea of blue' ideas, and a rousing rendition of 'Ole Solksjaers blue and white army' that could be sung for 10 minutes would be great. Get people bouncing.

Too many plastics and man utd, liverpool supporters
too many new City supporters, while good, dont know the songs Etc
the accoustics of the stadium are shit, the sound dont carry, creating a dull sound
the banter is gone along with hooliganism
the City didvide is growing and going to get a lot worse

I got to the ground at 2:45, couldn't get to my seat until West Ham hit the post in the 4th minute due to the massive queues.

Atmospheres all around the country are poor these days. I was at old Trafford yesterday a full house and absolutely nothing from the utd fans until they scored and even then they were poor.

Quite right. British fans are wimps at atmosphere generally. Only Rangers and Celtic offer something, but still nothing like you get in foreign grounds.

A lot of factors contribute to the poor atmospheres at grounds around the country from over zealous stewarding to ticket prices and especially in the PL all games live on t.v.

I sit in the ninian and the problem with the atmosphere has been there since we moved into the staduim bar for the odd game for example two rows down from me are two fat arseholes who are more interested in tucking into there rucksuck full of grub at half time, bloke with his missus at the end of the row so fat he cant stand and complains to the stewards if people are stood up.
People behind me complaining about standing up if you get up for a good rant. People leaving 10 mins or so before the game do my head in. If you want an atmosphere you need to go to away games.
The days of us being feared are long gone both home and away.
