11 things we learned from CCFC's defeat against West Ham...

Sun Jan 12, 2014 3:27 pm

...according to Wales Online:

1: EVERYTHING THE NEW MANAGER TOUCHES DOESN’T TURN TO GOLD: After the perfect start last week, this match was an utter let down. Solskjaer’s players were strangely insipid and lacking energy from the start, enabling West Ham to begin on the front foot when they really should have been put under the cosh.

2. MORE FIREPOWER IS NEEDED: While the second-half performance was much-improved, it is clear Cardiff are lacking real cutting edge in attack. Fraizer Campbell has done pretty well in fairness, but Solskjaer needs more options in January. Will target Mame Diouf be the man to provide them?

3: CRAIG BELLAMY IS STILL CITY’S TALISMAN: He may be in his 35th year, that zip to get past a full-back appears to have gone, many Cardiff fans reckon he isn’t worth a place in the team. But Craig Bellamy is as much Cardiff’s talisman today as he was in leading Malky Mackay’s side to the Championship title. Had an enormous impact.

4: EIKREM WILL REPLACE EITHER WHITTS OR MEDEL: Magnus Wolff Eikrem came to the Welsh capital amid rave reviews about his creative ability, but on the evidence of his Cardiff debut it seems more likely he will play a holding midfield role. One of Medel or Whittingham will surely have to make way.

5: THE DOUBTS ABOUT HUDSON WERE PROVED RIGHT: Lots of Cardiff fans, and pundits, have been adamant Hudson should have been playing from the start of the season but yesterday proved he still has much to prove at this level. Carlton Cole destroyed him and then Andy Carroll got the better of him too.

6. OLE WILL GET THE FANS BEHIND HIM: If anyone was going to ease the anger felt by some Cardiff supporters following Malky Mackay's treatment, it was a character like Solskjaer. As he addressed the fans prior to the match, urging them to 'support their idols' it became clear he will enjoy the same sort of bond as his predecessor.

7. ANDREAS CORNELIUS CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE: Came on as a substitute and had a chance late on to get Cardiff back in it. Should have done better with his header and appears the very definition of raw.

8. BIG SAM ISN'T SO USELESS AFTER ALL: Maligned by his own supporters, Sam Allardyce proved once again, when it comes to playing Cardiff City, he normally gets things spot on.

9: CARDIFF ARE IN THE RELEGATION SCRAP OF THEIR CAREERS: Successive home failures under three different managers against Southampton, Sunderland and West Ham have pushed the Bluebirds right down the table. It is possible they will be rock bottom by the time January is out. With a Premier League place at stake, it doesn’t come any bigger than this.

10. ROGER JOHNSON ISN'T QUITE AS BAD AS WE THOUGHT: Johnson spent the week as the butt of many a social media joke after a rather abysmal debut in West Ham's 6-0 defeat at Man City. Here, though, despite injuring one of his own players, he helped earn a clean sheet and made some decent blocks.

11. MR TAN WILL NEED TO BE PATIENT: If the Cardiff City owner was thinking the departure of Mackay would solve all his problems, he better think again. Trips to Old Trafford and the Etihad would suggest things are going to get worse before they get better. The new manager needs time to mold his team.

Just one observation from that lot. Their knocking of Hudson is strange. 'The doubts about Hudson were proved right'? Wtf? I thought Wales Online were pushing for him to start the game yesterday, and now they say that? Talk about changing your tune!

Carlton Cole 'destroyed him'? So what about Caulker? Did Cole not destroy him as well?

What a bloody joke Wales Online are!

Agree with every point. Bit harsh on Hudson is the only thing i partially disagree with. Don't think turner would of made much difference mind.

It's not harsh on Hudson it's a fact.He has a big heart, but he isn't even close to being good enough at this level.

All pretty obvious, including the comment about Hudson.

I preferred Huds to Turners recent performances.

I don't disagree with the other points, but singling out Hudson's struggle to deal with Cole whilst ignoring Caulker also not being able to deal that well with him is strange, wouldn't you agree?

people should be looking harder now.
what we learned..is having had the most negative manager ever for 30 months, allowed to bring in 34 players at a price of over 50 million, youd expect to at least inherit a half tidy bunch of defenders...........who out of ours is genuine prem quality.......Caulker.....just Caulker......John might be one day, KTC somedays i really like, others im not so sure, taylor no,hudson no,turner no, connonly no,,mcnaughton no..brayford can only imagine he is a no too as no 1 picks him.........
people rant about how thin the squad was when Malky arrived, this manager has many many more players ..but how many of any real use?..about 20 that draw wages and have no future with us

As local papers go they are poor. The local paper should have been holding the club to account over the rebrand, helped organise the protests, but nowhere to be seen.

We know they are a rugby paper, which only means the Wales national team.

Number 12 should have been the fans, as soon as we are favourites we are crap, we as fans need to understand we are not very good and every game is against man City. I think we all honestly thought this would be a 2-0. The atmosphere was similar to P'boro last year. Hopefully a full relegation battle will stir us in action

Hudson has always needed a run in the team to get to his best. Do not know if that is good enough and certainly don't think we have the time to find out. Who would replace him? As for TCK , he was responsible for the first goal yesterday , didnt track his man . Like him but prefer Kev.
We will fail to get more than four points in our next five games. In fact if we get four I will be happy. We will however remain in this leauge which will be decided on the final day against Chelsea, Cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Regarding no. 8, Big Sam never was useless.

Regarding no. 9, we have been in a relegation battle since that day at Upton Park in August.

We can get out of this situation only if we all stick together :ayatollah:

It will have to be goodbye Mr Whitts for me - without Medel we will concede lots of goals, and we as we are struggling to score, the outcome will be certain relegation :(

Hudson I thought was really good, and statistically he was actually our best player, not sure why everyone is so critical. Carroll didn't cause him any problems I don't remember, he was off the pitch when he set up the second goal.
