Declan John - Not a full back

Sat Jan 11, 2014 6:52 pm

Undoubtedly the kid has talent, but is he a full back ?

He looks a left midfielder to me and definitely not ready for the premier league at this stage in his career

He's a winger and everyone knows it, can play wing back but needs experience, should have played in the Champ last season to get him prepared rather than a few cheap cup games we couldn't win. He should have received the ball more though as he was in good positions

What match were you at, John worked his arse off and looked as good as anyone in both teams. What tripe you write.

He looks great in the opposition half, but he can't defend and his height will be an issue...

West Ham only ball was the long ball over his head in the first half. As I said in the opening post looks a wide midfield/ winger to me.

Looks to me like a great talent, as a fullback. Don't know if you have another player in that position thats good but if you don't, you do need to buy/loan a couple of fullbacks. The central midfield looks pretty strong, add a winger and a striker and it doesn't look like a relegation squad, the way i see it. But Declan looks pretty solid.

Declan John played well today.

We will only get better if whitingham and odemwingie get dropped. They were absolutely shit.

The kid is streets ahead of Taylor and will only get better. I know it's a game of opinions, I think your opinion is way off. He had no pretectiom at times today and still did a grand job.

You must have watched a different game to me, for his age and experience he showed more composure and effort than certain individuals. As for premiership standard how many in todays team are seriously Premiership standard, very few I'm afraid.

He's played the last couple of games with Whitts ahead of him and Turner inside him. Today he had new players around him. Still thought he played well.

He used to play as a striker when he was young, then moved to the wing, then to full back. I think in time he will be one of our best players and the next big export. He's only 19.

Playing style reminds me of Carlos Teves.

I have faith that he can develop into a good player but I didn't rate his performance yesterday.

all left foot, how do they train them at the academies? because the Europeans are comfortable with BOTH feet

his crossing was wayward and thats being kind because he's a young lad playing for the team of his dreams :ayatollah:

some of you are out of your mind. Was arguably one our best players yesterday.

I wonder if I watch the same game as most people on this forum :?

It seems like every time we lose we have to go through every player one by one and explain why they're shit and need replacing.

Very odd.

wtf!!! he's bloody brilliant. not once did Downing get past him yesterday even when he had ground to make up. if anyone wants to disagree then watch the game back. he drove from the back plenty of occasions, better decision making will come with time but he's definitely a full back and definitely not out of his depth.

Superb talent who will only get better with confidence. One thing I did notice all game though which may count against him as far as OGS is concerned at thsi moment is that he did not once try to get to the bi-line. Not expected from most left backs but he had plenty of opportunities but not once took the option. OGS workd with a system of attacking full backs and will expect crosses to come from them. Perhaps why Fabio is being signed as well as John's age/lack of experience

If he did commit and charge forward to the bi line and we lose possession, they break, he's then out of position, they score from his side, he gets slaughtered. I think he's concentrating on defending more than getting forward. He is only young and definately a very good prospect. Wait till he's full of confidence and charging up and down the left hand side. Unfortunately, we don't time to wait, we are in the midst of a relegation dog fight

What is it that you are expecting him to do???? He defended solidly, held onto the ball well and looked confident and totally unfazed by the prem. He is years better than his age and will improve the more he plays. He waa one of the best players today particularly in the first half. I'd like to see him get more cover on the left so he can use his pace to attack defences more without gaving to worry about losing the ball

Was fantastic yesterday up against Downing (an established Premier League winger). Bit more confidence needed in tricky positions, he whacked it out of play and took it safely as any 18 year old would in the Premier League.

John hardly put a foot wrong yesterday, very impressive.

The only thing I would mention is how left footed he is. A few times he had the opportunity to knock it right footed to Hudson to keep possession but put it out of play with his left foot, however if he isn't comfortable on his right foot he did the sensible thing.

One of our best players, played some lovely crosses.. looked wayward but caused trouble.

He was brilliant defensively. Most of our defenders always bottle it under pressure on times, he got the ball out for a throwing when needed to. Most of our players can't clear for s**t.

He looks about 12, has little experience and is probably our most composed and reliable defender. Even Caulker has his moments. Declan John is something special and if we go down this season he will be gone for a pittance in the summer.
