Fri Jan 10, 2014 11:35 am

Driving through nelson earlier in the week and past where the old queen of hearts nightclub used to be.got me thinking about all the old clubs in and around caerphilly which have closed. Used to do the club camelot on a friday, queen of hearts saturday and the double diamond on a sunday.also the corbetts in caerphilly and talk of wales in rhymney all closed. only pulsars/checkmate in caerphilly left open i think, anyone remember these clubs.

What happened to the double diamond. When I worked in Sony Bridgend they used to book the Double Diamond for Christmas functions, lay on free buses and used to have artists of the era, Faith Brown, Darts, Brotherhood of Man and we didnt have to pay. Those were the days.

Casablanca in Mount Stuart square, Butetown in the late 70s - could get stoned just walking into the place! Owner used to drive a Lotus parked down the lane.

Massive old fashioned bar down one side if memory serves me right.

Saw Paul Young down there before he made it big, fronting the Q tips - wild night that was.

The choice of afternoon drinking for a Roath boy when the pubs used to shut at 3 was believe it or not the Police Club on Woodville Rd and Langdons on Richmond Rd, one a lot rougher than the other, no problem guessing that one. I'm not sure if the bar in Langdons ever actually closed, always good for an unplanned late one.

A lot of cabaret acts stopped going there so they tried a disco on a sunday to try and keep it going....the sticky carpet club we used to call it....anyway the place needed some work doing to it to bring it back up to the standards of years gone by, when people like shirly bassey used to play there...but it seems they decided it was not a viable venture and sold it. houses on there now.
Maybe Annis could fill a few gaps in because im sure his father owned the diamond in the 60s-70s as well as the queen of hearts.

I worked at the Queen of Hearts Club for my Father, Tiny was the manager in them days, rough place/rough town in them days.

The Double Diamond did well, but I was working in the Prince Wales, only ever worked there on a week day.

Casablanka was an amazing place. All the drugs you would ever need and the best reggae blues night.
proper intense nights going on until the next day 6am.

countryman reggae sound would do battle with sound systems from Bristol, London.

best of nights

Scaramouch - city road around 1982/83 - the only place I have ever been out looking to pick up a Girl but the woman picked me up !!!!

I was about 23 or 24 years then, got really pissed up with my mates - just about remember getting back in a taxi to her place and going to bed with Donna Summer but waking up in the morning next to Spit the Dog.

Fair play though, she did make me breakfast along with her 14 year old son !!! EEEEEEHHHHHH !!!

Fu-k me, Good days/nights those. :)

Also had a couple of jumps at the parachute club (The Wyndham) down by Doc Grahams Tattoo's Riverside. ;)

At least it was an easy pull to go home with a bird, not like at the Top Rank(Queen street), which was a bit more classy(not much though), where the girls all danced around their handbags and the fella's all stood on the railings, and waited for the slow ones !!!! ha,ha,ha  :o

Now I'm just an old fart and even wan-ing takes an effort!!!! :laughing5: :laughing5:

Blooobirds !!!! :old:
